Hi
I brought this external turbo to try it out on my iWaver01 PRO
I ve hooked it up and it makes my motor (iWaver X-speed) run VERY slow. Like it is on flat batteries.
Hooked it up to my bigfoot and the same thing (iWaver X-Speed PRO)
After taking it off both cars run normally.
I got out the multimeter and the battery wires that hook directly to the batteries are getting 4.8 Volts which I assume is right. Swapping around the ESC board connections and the motor connections makes no difference.
Any ideas as to what is happening?

Maybe you should think about getting yourself a Woah Nelly Turbo after feb, I cant put it into words but you need ph2t to tell you the diffrence between the turbo you have and what the nelly can DO For you… :smiley2:

azza are you hooking it all up right?.. sounds like a bad connection or sumthing

mm…..there is 6 wires on the turbo right? RED to battery positive, black to battery negative, purple to PCB motor + terminal, white to PCB motor – terminal, green and yellow to the motor.
What batteries are u using? -

Just using NIMH 800’s
Just the 6 wires, and they are labelled so I dont know what is wrong.

OK, friend from another forum is having the same problem as me.
We are both following the same instructions so I believe that is the problem and we are hooking it up wrong rather than a dead turbo. Can anyone explain how an external works or point me in the right direction. I think if I have a better understanding of the electronics (i’m relatively new to electric RC) that I might be able to solve the problem myself.
Cheers

Azza,
The turbo will need to have 6 wires (as it does). battery power which should be picked up from the same locations as the stock Rx board does, and 4 signal wires that mount in place of the FETs.Are you removing the stock FETs for the install?
The signal wires could be being mucked around. I suggest taking a look at http://www.whoanelly.com to see how an alternative turbo mounts, and compare it. It may give you a point in the correct direction…

Good point, the instructions say to attach directly to the battery terminals, this meant that the mosfet would heat up (not good). I was too scared to leave it like that for more that a few seconds.
Thanks, i’ll check that link

OK, some progress. If I sawp the battery connections around you get the car to run. It only runs at about half speed and only when the batteries are relatively fresh (NiMH 800’s)
It is of my opinion that the turbo wants more voltage. Can I safely add another cell withot harming the stock iwaver electrics?

azza2000…..i also have a gpm v2 external turbo, and it’s an acceptable torque booster – for motors in the 40t range. It is best to NOT yoke it to any motor hotter than 40turns…..I know for a fact that it really struggles (slower speed/torque, LOTS of resistance and power-sucking heat) when trying to run a PNSO3. In short, I’d not pair it with the following motors: PNSO2 PNSO3 PNSO4, Xspeed PRO (iwaver), any ATOMIC AR-18 variant (T1 T2 or Z2), NML’s motors (DEFINITE no-no), or a Plasma Dash variant (this will cook ur V2 turbo in quite a short while).
A safer Turbo for faster motors are the TWIN TURBO ones from GPM And TLP respectively. They allow more amp draw than the V2….but are also heavier.
Or better yet, go internal and swap the iwaver fets from a 2×3 stack of 4562 fets.
Heck, seeing as we’re on 2 external turbo’s, get the absolute best- ph2t’s whoanellys.

so what the hell is the point of that? why have a turbo that’s only a tiny bit better than the stock fets??:8ball:
