Yeah, I saw it in the shop, the first edition has 1 wheel and a few extra parts, so its going to be a long road to getting a finished car.

Haha… yeah, that “magazine” has been out overseas many moons ago.
Yeah, you buy your RC Subaru piece by piece… and I can’t think of any more enjoyable way of doing it!! (haha… I am KIDDING!)
And I seriously doubt if that $4-95 Introductory Price will be kept like that for the remaining issues… :smiley2:
I think I’ll be saving my money… unless some certain editions can provide useful tidbits for any projects.
-
February 14, 2004 at 5:36 am #36963
IT’s all about the small print….
$4.95 the first issue, $15.95 for every issue after that. I’ve been *told* it’s 48 issues……
personally I would just buy a real RC car…..

Sounds liek that build-a-robot magazine that come out a while back… A collegue has 3/4 built his robot and I think he’s not getting any more parts…
At 48 issues I think a nice TL01 or buggy or whatever could be had easily 😉

my mates younger brother is still getting parts for his build a robot thingy. latest part was a voice recog. microphone for the remote….
he swears there will be a screen forthe remote and a camera for the robot soon. -

$15.95 X 48 + 4.95 = $770.55
That’ll get you a His & Hers PAIR of TL01B… Baja King & Queen?? :smiley2:

All the info can be found here:
http://www.deagostini.com.au/radiocontrolcar/action.php
from the FAQ:
What are the engine specifications?
Engine type: Mabuchi RS-540SH-7520
Voltage: 7.2 V
Speed: 20,000 rpmHow many issues will be in the collection?
Your Radio Control car will be complete in 45 parts.
Stuff that!
There’s also some video on the site, check it out. The car doesn’t look like it’s going THAT fast. Not as fast as the TV ad makes it out to be anyways……

yeah i got one of these mags, got it last night. a issue comes out every week, and it is 14.95 after that. the parts are cheap, and u will be paying over 100 for a 80 doller car in the end! it’s not worth it.
-
February 14, 2004 at 8:51 pm #36949
I was wondering when this would happen. I was hoping for an LXX Mini-Z type deal and as the weeks go on, you’d get ball races a ball diff and so on. I think that would have been worth getting.
Don’t forget, you get free gifts! :p

A Mabuchi RS540 wouldn’t make 60km/h.
Why pay so much for it??? It’s cheap crap!!!
-

Im gonna get the issue with the Rx/Tx, not bad for 15.95 i guess!

Ahh, new 540s sell for $15-20 at LHS anyway, no huge ripoff there.

February 16, 2004 at 8:46 pm #36907
I suppose if you had to go build yourself a $30,000 Commodore
entirely out of GMH’s spareparts items, that’ll probably cost
you over $100,000 in parts alone before labour, shop supplies etc. That’s called MARKETING for you, matey.
Slight correction too… think its
1x $ 4.95
44x $14-95
= $662-75Wow, $120 discount! :smiley16:
-
February 16, 2004 at 10:43 pm #36865
And the Commodore would probably take more than 45 magazine issues to put together as well, lol.
(Damn, where have the smileys gone?)
🙂 uA -
February 17, 2004 at 12:22 am #36868
One of the big Ford builders who’s name escapes me, built a V8 ute (before Ford sold them) entirely from new parts, so it probably isn’t that expensive. A complete body costs $8000, another $8k on an engine, so you’d have $14k to finish the rest of the car…
-
February 17, 2004 at 2:29 am #36888
Twas those guys that build Limos etc… Either Jacab (Tamworth based) or Hillier – I can’t remember which.

sounds kinda cool never seen it in the us tho. but i guess if you buy rc mags alot and if its a good mag then its worth it but if your doing it for the car its not worth it.
but if you dont have much money and wanan finance a rc car this sounds like the way lmao

February 17, 2004 at 7:36 am #36879
I worked in spare parts about a year ago, and one of the customers there had just picked up a brand new Monaro shell from Holden for like $2,500.
-
February 17, 2004 at 4:23 pm #36874
Don’t know if any of you guys have experience in rebuilding/restoring 1:1s, but usually its “big bits are cheap, its the little bits that cost the most”. 😯
-
February 17, 2004 at 4:27 pm #36872
Dunno about restoring, but engine rebuilds cost alot.
-
February 17, 2004 at 4:46 pm #36871Quote:Dunno about restoring, but engine rebuilds cost alot.
Engine rebuilds aren’t cheap, but at least its a case of go or no-go.
Put the good parts in, reassemble it right and you’ve got a pretty
good chance of it starting at first pop – even if its a DIY job.But with…
-interior trimming *
-upholstery *
-dashboard re-veneering *
-rebuild instruments *
-overhaul drivetrain
-rebuild gearbox, and overdrive unit
-rebuild brakes
-panel beating
-cutting out all the rust
-serious paint preparation
-a proper paintjob(* = very few tradesmen left in these trades!!)
That’s where the real $$$ disappear too.
If brand new spareparts were (supposedly) so cheap, there’ll be
no market for the chopshop “parts recyclers” that are everywhere. :smiley2: -
February 17, 2004 at 4:55 pm #36870
For anyone who’s too blind to read, the website
to the subject car was posted earlier. :dead:Quote:btw its not a “magazine” like you’d think eg Woman’s Day.
If its anything like the previous Robot and all the other similar
‘marketing’ efforts, all you’ll find in the paper bit is advertising
& brief instructions if any.Definitely a huge page on “what’s in next month”!!?! 😀
-
February 17, 2004 at 11:37 pm #36855
Holden will sell you a shell really cheap if you aren’t going to register it (something to do with ADR approval I guess).
The Hilliers build utes based on wagons, but the one I’m thinking of was a purely parts build, no body work. The builder was an engine man.
The $$ disappear when you have to pay $30+ an hour for labour, but DIY, well it’s all ‘free’.
And it seems WA isn’t getting the mag, at least not yet…
-
February 20, 2004 at 7:54 pm #36742
Im gonna have a go (heck you gotta learn somewhere!!! I’ve got a hoist, tools, etc. ) at rebuilding the top end of my engine, then later on maybe put a dual barrel weber on it with a nissan patrol airscoop ($80 new from nissan dealer) and a small airbox, just to make a boring L20B an eeency bit more fun. It won’t go hard, but i don’t want a car that goes too hard when i’m still an inexperienced driver……unless it’s R/C, where the chance of getting killed in an accident is almost impossible. Lol some people have been killed by scalextric cars, by lying on the ground and watching the cars zoom towards them……..
-
February 20, 2004 at 8:31 pm #36729
You found yourself some wheels, Tassie bro? 🙂
1st rule with cars is… “if it ain’t broken, fix it until it is”. :p
Don’t do any explaratory work on anything unless you have to, you’ll bound to find something to meddle with… and it’ll always take longer and more $$ than you budget for.
When mucking about with an old bomb, make sure you set a “limit” on how far you pull stuff off too. If you don’t, you might find yourself having taken out every last bolt and you have a basket case in your hands = 20yr restoration project.

/me is at the beginning of the mod addiction of her 1:1 car….
so far the list includes
CAI and K&N filter
clear side indicators
rear sway bar
fully sik interior neonz
replaced the head unit with mp3 player
stickers = 10kw each dontchyaknow
headers are in the mail 😉
17*7″ dtm executives with rubber = lots of $$ but schweeeeetwanted:
window tint on my tinted glass
jap spec factory ecu
dump it!!!
custom painted brake calipers
driving lights
custom punched plate mesh alternative in the front barand I am making the fatal mistake of not waiting until the stuff is broken, and that is why I am broke 🙁
and then this car will be for sale…. it will be fully schik! phat!

Ok, back to the Original Topic. :smiley2:
btw… I couldn’t find this magazine car in the city, so today I went all the way out to the suburbs… and yay I found a newsagent carrying it.
My lord.
Then I went had a chat with a nearby LHS.
Seems he’s pretty rapt with the concept… as there’s now quite a few newbies coming in and asking about RC, more than usual.
He’s patiently telling them they’re gunna spend $600+ on that… uh “thing”… and for much less he can sell them a real Tamiya full set.
But what gets them is the waiting for 40+ weeks. Nah, kiddies have no patience these days.
Real amazing thing is… these same kiddies WANT to build their car, they demand it! Yeah, they’re not interested in an RTR, even an XB Tamiya. They wanna piece it together!!!
I approve! 🙂
-
February 23, 2004 at 4:19 pm #36667
Well why not??? If i got an RTR, i’d have to rip it to bits and re-build it just to get the satisfaction. I love things that come in kit form, building is half the fun!!!
-
February 25, 2004 at 9:57 pm #36632
…this magazine went on sale here in Japan yesterday…590 JPY for the first one and then 1400 jpy each week after that…i MIGHT get it to put together with my son…i would have to stock up on issues for him because a week of waiting is almost too much !! He has enough trouble waiting for pokemon to come back on between commercials…The whole thing look sinteresing though…it will be worth it keeping an eye on…the physical BUILDINg of it is quite inviting indeed…admittedly it would be MUCH MUCH cheaper to buy a surikarn even and piece that together…gee…i think i just talked myself out of it..lol…
-
February 25, 2004 at 10:48 pm #36605
Buy a nice kit, keep it in daddy’s closet and give him a new part each time sonny’s been a good boy… :D:)
-
February 25, 2004 at 11:06 pm #36606
…Panda 🙂 THAT would take longer than the magazine…lol…I dont have a son…i have a very small monster child 🙂
…I will stick to the Z’s and watch out for any parts that might look useful 🙂 One SPRING a week just doesnt do it for me…lol…
-
February 26, 2004 at 5:32 am #36590
i have a tamiya QD series (early RTR) and its ok, although it doesnt resemble a built kit at all. take off the lexan body and its just like a tandy RC. its good though for kids starting out like myself that dont want to smash something that took me a week or so to build.
i was looking at a kit a while ago, but considering i hardly drive my QD anymore, driving my TA01 would be a one off thing.
plus, theyre only fun on wet roads, which is why a QD is good because its all enclosed 🙂

February 26, 2004 at 7:17 pm #36584

so I’ll add to it.Panda already knows this, but I (for some unknown reason) want to return to my childhood and restore a Sandscorcher.
But, alas, I cant afford another mortgage.

*laughs* For me in the R/C sense I would have to acquire a Tamiya 959. Probably more than 3 😉
1: Shelf Queen
2: Box Hero
3: Show-off Runner
4: Runner
5: Runner for really runningHowever the price of those will buy me about 200kw extra in the XR6T 👿

I’d agree too, but think it all boils down to economics.
There’s no shortage of CNC equipment everywhere, but the time & effort required to tool up to manufacture each and every part (100s) would add up significantly. You’d need:-
-metal stamping
-cast metal molding
-machined gears from steel & nylonEven if one produced a run of say 100 pcs, might still be asking $5000 per unit for a complete kit.
For that amt… might as well just eBay a NIB kit for US$2000 and get the real thing.
Same applies for individual parts too. If I had access to a lathe I could probably cut a new gear for that shaft quite easily & a hunk of brass is cheap. But to commission a workshop to do it, they’d quote $50-100 easy.
Hmm, what if one farmed it out to China… :smiley2:
Although was mentioning to uA recently… might be an interesting project to remold every component of a Sand Scorcher in transparent polymer. Purely as a display piece..!! 😀

Shows how little i know about women, but i guess you never stop learning ay. And in my teeny bit of experience, every female is different (duh!!:smiley2:) so you have to find the right way to her heart(aint this lame?:p), which is something you have to find out by taking risks (I hate doing this, its the make or break point). Not that anybody cares anyway lol.
Mortgage…….hope i never have one, my parents never did!
12 of those buggers, holy jeeeeesus what the hell would you do with them all? Vintage R/C don’t appeal to me…..yet. The only old cars that appeal to me are prince skylines/hakasuka’s and the 240Z.

on that note, i own an r30 datsun/nissan skyline 🙂 its older than me!
-
March 3, 2004 at 4:29 pm #36405
I couldn’t decide whether it was an R30 or an R31…headlights/bonnet??
Brother has a nice resprayed black R30 in his car collection, it has a list of performance parts including an engine conversion.
Twizm, i dont reckon its a drag racer, why would it have those huge spoilers for drag racing???

-
March 3, 2004 at 5:56 pm #36423
…Its not a drag racer its a ‘course’ racer if that makes any sense…
…Its a Skyline Silhouette Formula from the early 80’s here in Japan…4 valve DOHC RS-Turbo 🙂 its a 6th generation R30…TWO exist, a FIRST version and a SECOND version…The one pictured above is the 2nd version…
…Skynet Aoshima released them as readysets and the Autoscales showed up about two weeks ago…Slightly more expensive than your regular autoscale but the workmanship in them is outstanding…The design is oulandish but being a Skyline there are part of the whole Nissan ‘religion’ 🙂

I’m lucky enough that one of the wholesalers I used to deal with has extremely close company links to Aoshima so been trying to not to drool to hard over this and a couple of its companion racers for a while…
