Bali like most indonesian provinces and second and third world countries hold their savings in cash USD. It makes me if the kids at the airport in Dili, East Timor are begging for $1 USD or AUS.
Which reminds me, most things come from China, so it is Dollar to Yuan exchange rate. There is a lot of pressure on China to raise it’s exchange rate. The government pegs the rate against the US$.
It keeps the rate low to attact manufacturing and employment.
It means that there is plenty of work for cheap chinese labour, and because their exchange rate is poor, so are the people.
When and if the rate is let float, china will be extreemly rich and the chinese will have massive buying power.
They will have all the factories, all the jobs and all the money 🙂
Long term future for china is looking good.Edited by – trash on 19 February 2004 20:06:07

It makes things nice and easy now, all you do is get your final price in US$ and multiply by (only) 1.25 to get Aussie $$
So US$10 becomes AU$12.50
How am I supposed to stop buying stuff if this keeps going on.

Yeah, once upon a time Australia had title of “best living conditions” in the whole world… back in the 70s.
Since then, I think local industry has been lulled into some false sense of security and there’s been no new advances – no attempt to shore up Oz’s future.
Three decades ago it was a case of living off the sheep’s back, cropping or digging up stuff and selling it o/s.
Today… heck, what else does Oz export?

Haha, economists wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on – 50% say its going Up, 50% say its going down and the rest are Undecided. 🙂
An economist is just an opinionated fella that thinks he knows what’s going on, like when you’re watching the animals in the zoo and trying to predict what they’ll do next.
Ever met a rich economist? Nah, me neither – and I’m in that trade. If only an economist could get his guess right any more than 30% of the time (yes 30%, no joke), he would be a rich man.
