g’day, i’ve never looked into buying pre made cf sheets before and yellow pages didn’t help much.
basically, i’m looking for pre-fab cf sheets like 2 – 3mm thick to make replacement parts for an rc car. so i’m not after a large quantity.
it would be great if i could buy it locally at a retail outlet, hardware shops don’t stock it.
but failing that if anyone knows of a good online outlet i’m all ears (erm, eyes?)any help is much apreciated, even the name of the type of shop i should be searching for would be great! :8ball:

I can’t help directly, but I did see a rally driver making his own side mirrors from CF sheets and adding the resin.
I don’t know if they’d help you find a source, but contact MRT Rally, I think at, http://www.mrtrally.com.au and see if Brett Middleton or someone can help you.
Alternatively look for someone in motorsport closer to you.Good luck!

Try rc plane shops. Dunno about ‘sheets’, but Rojs Hobbies in Fairfield has ‘strips’ about 10-20mm wide. I’ve used them to fix my MA-010 chassis.

10-15yrs ago we could get small panels of CF boards from the aviation service/repair industry, for which Vic was a pretty big player. But these days that industry has died, all gone offshore.
Your best bet for retail quantities is Fibrelyte in UK; they can supply sheets or if you’ve CAD’d a design they can cut it for you too. Either way its not cheap, but given the health hazards with CF dust – I’d prefer to pay with $$, not your lungs.
For other stuff, I’ve been doing my fabrication out of PCB fibreglass.

I’m assuming you’d know about this anyway, but here we go…
CF is probably not the answer for toughening up basher vehicles, as it is so stiff and brittle it will quite easily shatter/break on impact. Soft nylon/FRP is the most durable material as it flexes to absorb shock.
However if you are building a race vehicle, CF’s rigidity will help handling and take a bit of weight off…if you are a good driver.
If not, nothing looks sexier than a chassis decked out with CF and anodized alloy :beer: .

the reason i chose cf is because i will be able to work with it using the tools i already have.
aluminium is a more affordable choice but i find it clogs up files and grinding wheels.
i thought of using blank pcb but for a full chassis i don’t think it will be strong enough.i chose a bad time to hunt for cf too, from what i can gather there appears to be a worlwide shortage of the stuff (i blame them scientists and their carbon nanotube junk!)
the parts i’m replacing are fibreglass reinforced plastic, if i can get hold of that i think it will be my choice.
i should have mentioned it sooner but if anyone can get me a chassis for a hpi rs4 rally/sport then please lemme know!!:D :8ball:

PCBs can be sandwich glued together with epoxy to double their thickness, usually plenty strong if you avoid the pre-drilled veroboard stuff.
CF is a bugger to cut & file. Your drills and files go blunt extremely quickly, even high speed steel and diamond files aren’t much tougher. Plus I also try to file/cut under water to avoid wearing big chunky repiratory masks.

Should be similar to chassis for original RS4 Sport & RS4 Pro… but all discontinued now.Wonder if you can take the HPI Sprint’s chassis and recut the holes to suit.
It looks wider and fatter than RS4’s design so should be enough fat there.
Not sure how much of the Sprint’s mechanicals are recycled from RS4
but the overall layout is pretty identical. -

Just a thought.
Bunnings sell fibreglass cloth and resing etc.
I’m sure you could make sheets with it.
I like it because it looks juuuusssst like CF except it’s white. Very sexy.
I’ve used PCB for making brackets and parts, very easy to work with if you have a scrollsaw.

If you’re talking about the 1st generation HPI RS4s, yes they are identical!Both EP and GP RS4s from that era (which I think the Rally is based on)
use pretty much the same gearboxes front and rear, suspension identical.Very surprisingly Tower still has the nitro chassis…

Aluminium definitely more forgiving for Rally use, better than FRP.
The silver stock one could be better for modifying as it uses panhead screws.
The purple option chassis (used on RS4 Racer) is thicker & countersunk
so would be more work to do screw holes.I still have my RS4 Sport, Nitro RS4 & Nitro RS4 Racer here… np’s if you
want to take a lookie to check the differences – over xmas period maybe? -

Leon’s got the right bit, HPI “A230” is the exact part number.
I just walked over to the shelf and picked up the RS4 Sport… yep same part!
Unfortunately I’ve also found this thread… which confirms HPI has run out of stocks and not making any more, but thread poster seems to have commissioned a run of aftermarket units.

Yea, that website was the only one i can find that still stock that part. But like Panda said, Aluminium would be better suited to rally use. Get the nitro chassis and mod it. 🙂

cheers panda, the countersunk purple chassis sounds good, just curious as to whether it has rolled edges? looks like it does. what about the stock one? rolled edges? i just worry that they may get in the way of the battery.
i’ll email that bloke on rcu if all else fails.
so after all that, no matter what i end up with (actually managed to repair the main chassis, lexan + superglue!;) ) i’d still like to make my own.
as that bloke on rcu said the weak point is where the steering shafts screw in (see attached pic). i think i can make one stronger by eliminating the big cutout between the 2 holes.
then again i could try to avoid hitting walls at full speed a little better!:D :8ball:

yes the nitros have a bit of a folded-up edge below the engine, you can see it in the Tower pix.But nuttin’ a big vice + hammer can’t fix 😉 especially with the thinner stock plate. Gets warped regularly from running anyway, needs a bit of panel bashing occasionally.

Wouldn’t even bother making cutouts, just leave the thing whole – it don’t help cooling anyways. And give a bit more meat around the outer holes.
Can buy sheets of aircraft-grade aluminium quite easily, easy to cut with a nibbler or jigsaw. Maybe even the chequer-board stuff…

cf sheet in different thicknesses is used a fair bit in orthotic manufacture. i used to work as a secretary for my mum who was a podiatrist and used to think the cf sheet could come in handy. we stopped making orthotics from scratch when a company in melbourne started to produce them in bulk custom orders. we only did minor alterations and repairs after then so the mats for manufacture just didnt get ordered. cf sheet became available after we stopped production so i dont know much about it.
these guys are in geelong, but almost any podiatrist would have the same catalogue with the cf sheet available for order. its for medical purposes so it might be a little pricey, but youll probably be getting some very nice matirials though.
