      Hi all,
      what is your special method of charging your cars??

      My favourite is using my Orbit Microlader Charger, but it requires the cell to be taken out :dead:.

      My second favourite is using my custom charger using an LM317 IC (voltage regulator), it is set up as a current regulator/limiter, and supplies a constant current of approx 350mAh to the car’s stock battery, which takes about 10-15 minutes to FULLY charge the cell, giving me 1/2 hour runtimes.

      I have a dream… a charger that does 4 cars at once, so you know everyone in a race has equal battery charge – no more excuses. With everyone on equal charges for a race, and if the motor size and battery size are the same, then everyone should run out at about the same time. Nothing worse than having someones car die in the middle of a good race.

      I too use a custom LM317 charger. I use a pot to control the rate of charge so I can do a standard quick charge like the controller or do a 5mA 12-16hr trickle charge. I am a tight ass so an intelli peak charger or similar was out of the question. For $1.80 for the LM317 plus a couple more bucks for the other components I have a charger that is pretty much indestructable (chip has thermal cut off). Get yourself a multimeter so you can check which positions on the pot are what rates.

      With NiMH batts you should NOT fully discharge them as you should with NiCad batts. It is possible to over discharge a NiMH which does some serious damage. To stop fully discharging the NiMH batt, you need to take it out of the car or put in a switch. The NiMH batts have no major memory effects so you can half charge or fully charge with no side effects. NiCad’s on the other hand do have memory effects, ie if you do a full charge you should only fully charge it from here on, likewise if you do a partial charge you should do the same from now on. You can mix you charge rates around but the performance will change quite a bit.

      With the smaller batteries, the longer more gentle (low mA) charges are better in the long run. I don’t like to do a full charge in less than an hour, but as long as the battery doesn’t get hot you can charge it faster.

      If you think you batt is stuffed try putting it in the freezer for 24hrs then try it again. May fix your problem. (This works on Mobile phone batts too).

      Using a pot ain’t a great idea, you can only flow 1/4 watt through them. A 5 watt ceramic resistor should work great.

      I use the pot to control the output voltage. Has bugger all current running through.

      yes it is a voltage reg but with a feedback circuit. So I guess it is a current reg in a way. Difficult way to do things but I have a few add ins on the horizon so i am thinking ahead.

      I’ve posted this before, but here is a pic of the “Voltage regulator” charger I use.

      Its a twin LM317 regulator, with 2x 555 timers doing the timing control. Switchable using rotary switches in steps from 1 minute to 4, at voltages of 2 to 12 volts output.

      I also use a Pirahna delta peak charger.

      That is almost Identical to the charger im about to start making for bigger R/C, except im using 2 LM 350’s.

      Is there anyway to over charge a battery in one of these things?
      Like charging a 200mah battery 6 or 7 times..would that do any damamge to it?

      Davef’s dream of a muilt charger system would be great, i really need one of those.

      any ideas on how to make one????

      Well…most people seem to go with a voltage regulator. Which flows maximum current at the beginning, dropping to almost nothing at the end of the charge.

      I prefer Current regulator or constant current, which pumps a constant amount of juice into the battery at all times.

      I guess both could be used to make a good charger though……

      The Dick Smith Catalogue has circuits in the back using voltage regulators that will make a good charger.

      So no one knows if charging a 200mah battery 7 times would hurt it? Thats what I’m going to do first charge on my 200mah battery if it doesn’t hurt it…

      You wont hurt it, you could charge it 20 times on a standard controller and it still wont be full.
