Several months ago I acquired a set of jewelery scales capacble of accurately measuring down to 0.01g.

Since then I’ve been dropping parts onto the scales when I get a chance and comparing weights. So far we’ve only measured stuff on the NanoDragon and the AWD, but already the results have been interesting.

      The Results:

      • MA010 Centre Driveshaft
        Stock Kyosho: 1.18g
        Carbon Fiber: 0.34g
Kyosho Titanium (includes metal pinion): 1.31g
TopCad Alloy (includes metal pinion): 0.70g
      • MA010 Universal shaft (each)
        Stock Kyosho: 0.47g
        Kyosho Alloy: 1.14g
      • MA010 Knuckle/Hub
        Stock Kyosho: 0.48g
        PN Racing 0.5 Alloy: 1.06g
      • MA010 Differential
Stock Kyosho with PN Racing Alloy Outdrives: 2.18g
        TopCad Alloy Ball Diff: 3.55g
      • MA010 Top Cover Front
        Stock Kyosho: 1.34g
PN Racing Alloy (open top): 2.29g
      • Generic: Wheel Nut (each)
        Stock Plastic: 0.04g
        Alloy: 0.06g

As you can see the majority of hop-ups tested so far are heavier than the stock parts. However this doesn’t take into account the improved rgidity, strength, durability and precision of hop-ups.

That is interesting, any chance for more comparisons? 🙂

I compared some 1 2 and 3 degree toe-in steering arms for an MR01 and measured 0.05mm difference between the 2 & 3 degree arms. I couldn’t tell them apart by eye checked their length with a micrometer.

Once installed, the difference in toe-in was visible.

So even if there’s “just 1 gram” difference, it might just be having a big impact somewhere 🙂

Weight wise, I imagine they were very much the same as the original part since they are all plastic.

      Cheers, Graham.

Yep, there will be more comparisons as I get parts and stuff. I’ll also try to weight stock parts.

It’s going to be a long process to make an authorative list, but that’s the goal of this thread…

The tough thing is that while I’d like to weigh all the hop-ups we stock, noone likes buying opened packs. 🙂

Plastic vs. Alloy wheels would be a good thing to weight.
