yep that s right! i m doing it with an enertec clone because the speed and rough concrete i drive on warrants it. can t beleive i didn t think of it before, but i m basing it on a mini z h plate design. i ve cut the rear section off and sanded to shape, and i ll use a little bit of acetate for the h plate . won t be independant rear suspension though, but the design should allow a little twisting of the rear section. watch this space………….:8ball:

I have seen a pic of this idea somewhere on the net before. It is probably the most practical way to mod a bit for rear suspension.
Make sure you post some pics when you are done.

yeh ive tryed bout 4 differnt types of rear suspention… and the best is the h plate system… i couldnever get it to work becasue the stiffness has to be pretty exact

i think ph2t was working on something like this betty, it might be good to speak to him and see what he’s done.

I made a prototype of the H plate suspension on BCG before. It works well because the plastic i use is really thin and it absorbs shocks alot. And I am working on a Suspension that’s like the 4WD rear suspension which will be good for rough terrains

well i put it together last night and did a bit of testing today and the results are very pleasing. i learnt not to heat it up with a lighter to fine tune the position because this made the plastic brittle and it eventually broke! i’ll put it together again tonight and take some pics, i’m borrowing a real digi cam tonight so i’ll be having a bit of a fashion shoot. make me want it!!:D:8ball:

…Tamiya does some great plastic ‘sheets’…I use 5mm for all my Mini Z body mods and its tottally good for cutting sanding and puttying…They do all different thickness and some layered 0.2mm might be just what you need to keep your whole project rolling…BTW I layer the h plate on my z, hard and medium together but I am switching to an ‘O’ plate soon…maybe that will work for you bit project too 🙂

yeah, i’ve cut a hole in the center so it’s supported on the sides.
ok she’s done and boy does it perform!!:pthe enertec clone is already a 2 speed dual cell as standard so it does about 10 – 15 kph. i glued the ‘spring’ onto the motor housing and used screws to attach it to the chassis. i made the screwholes larger than the screw shaft so i could fine tune the position. if youre doing this, make a little hole in the plastic where it will flex. when it’s all together it should be stiffer than you want. then you can remove plastic from around the hole till it’s soft enough. here’s a pic from before it went together,
that’s the ‘h plate’ sitting on the scalpel. you can see the hole i made with a hole punch. you may also notice that i’ve added lego wheels and a very effective bumper bar!:smiley16: the lego tyres are a hard compound so you can get some nice drifting when turning at speed. i also had to move the pcb forward and upside down, as it’s much bigger than a bcg pcb. this is it finished on the right next to an untouched enertec chassis
and one of the underside
so how does she run? beautifully!:D the springy sway bar suspension mod is a proven winner around here and kepps the front wheels stuck to the ground on bumps 1mm and under and any thing over that it just bounces a little, but way less than a stock sway bar. the rear ‘spring’ alows up and down movement and it also twists a little which is like a crude independant rear suspension setup. but zero side to side movement which is great. the ability of the rear wheels to stick to the ground is greatly increased now! during a standard 5 minute run it used to roll over about 10 times, but after the mod it only happened once, and then landed back on it’s wheels!
i’ve looked at a bcg chassis and i think it could be done quite well but not as easily as an enertec. one advantage of doing it on a bit would be that you could lengthen the wheelbase which would greatly improve high speed handling, especially in multuple cell bits.
phew!:dead:whatta mouthful! now, any questions class!?:8ball:Edited by – betty.k on 10 December 2003 02:25:10

Sounds insane man! I can’t see the pics (prolly the works proxy though), I’ll check at home.
I’ll bring some of my springs I use for the front end suspension for you to try on the weekend.

dunno why you can’t see the pics, i’m trying to sort out my members gallery so i’ll let you know when it’s done.
ph2t, coolness! i’ve had trouble with springs in the past cos i never found the right size.:smiley16::8ball: -

BettyK, unfortunately the site hosting your pics has a reasonably low daily usage/access limit, thats why they cant be seen now.

yeah i gotta find a better pic host. anybody know where i should try? i’m currently using villagephotos.com.
but back on topic, i’ve been playing with this thing more today and it’s unreal! sticks to the ground really well and absolutely flies!
ph2t: don’t worry you’ll get to see and feel this little baby!:p:8ball: -

well remember that i’ve only done it once, and i don’t have the goodwill that say micro amps has with his fet mods. i’m going to try it with a tomy soon so i’ll let you know how confident i am with it then. if you really really really want it i’ll do it but it’s a lot of labour so i’m not sure about price, don’t wanna make money just wanna make people happy! but i should have the tomy done within the week. if you’re in melb we could hook up and go over it.:8ball:

betty, that mod is nuts… awesome.

December 11, 2003 at 9:46 pm #48589
i’ve made a start on this mod with a tomy bcg and it seems pretty easy to do. one prob is i’ve had to cut through the charging terminals on the chassis so i’ll have to think about how to do it. i might add a little socket instead. i also may have to move the internals around, not sure yet. i’m going to lengthen the wheelbase a little to improve high speed handling and so there’s some room for the spring to flex. i may even go nuts and make a steel spring shock and mount it a la miniz! i’m confident it can be done. i’m also customising some more lego wheels as the cherry on top!! i’ll be taking pics and make a new topic:8ball:
