I am using a guage that is slightly thicker than the standard steering wires.
Im not sure of the guage cos the paper with it written on has gone missing.
Its best to get as close as you can to the original wire.

Very clever. I wonder if that could be used to make a stronger or quicker (more responsive) turning BCG by using more or less wire??

I believe that the more turns of wire that you have = stronger magnetism = quicker turning
To get more turns in there, you will need THIN wire, as you can fit more turns of this in the same amount of space as the original coils.
You can make the coils slightly bigger than the originals, as long as they will still fit in the space, and I wouldn’t reccommend going wider than the original coils, as this may obstruct the steering.

hey if ya made the coils stronger wouldent they just SUCK the power and drain ya batt sooner besides the stearing happens pretty quick

More coils would equal more resistance I think, but that’s where my electronice knowledge runs out. I’m not sure if that would shorten the battery life or not. Anyway, by redoing your own coils you would no doubt end up with something different form the originals, either under or over.
I wonder what results more coils of a finer wire, or less coild of a thicker wire would produce. Play around Shypo and Scotty, and let us know.
The results of that should go in the technical area here and on QFM.

A Higher resistance = lower current consumption, so more turns of thinner wire should mean less battery drain.
Basically a thicker wire is closer to puting effectively a dead short in the circuit. But more current = a stronger magnetic field, then again you batteries are only capable of providing a certain amount of current, so it is a bit of a catch 22 situation.
But then you go the other way, more turns of a thinner wire should also result in a stronger magnetic field with a lower current drain.
Me thinks trial and experimentation will be the best way to find out the optimum wire guage and coil size / number of turns.
Then the problem of fitting it all in raises its ugly head.

Gee, winding by hand is kind tedious isn’t it? Since we’re not actually counting how many turns the coil is, couldn’t you put one end of that drawing pin assembly into a drill and start it winding at low speed? Less monotonous effort… plus you get a more regular winding…
I remember reading something about rare earth magnets being duds, because the magnet that came in the bit was already a rare earth magnet… and was stronger than the replacement ones to boot…
The impossible just takes a little longer -

hmmm, i thought about using 2 steering coils but i guess u guys publsihed it first, i seem to remebr DaveF and i talking about it…
u hav to use 2 rare earth magnets stuck toghgther Crom otherwise its just pointless

I didn’t count the no of winds when I did the winding, I just measured a length of enamelled wire, and cut 1.5m,
I just wound and wound till it was all gone!
Make sure that the two strands that you solder to are the same length.
If u find that you cannot wind nemore on, then just cut a bit of,
measure the length cut off, then subtract this from your original length.
This will give you the length that u need!
It was actually quite quick to wind with this method!!!!
