Has anyone done the spring suspension mod on QFM’s site?
What kind of performance increase does it actually give?

Yes i have,
It does make your turning circle grater and the car spins out less but if the springs are too long the car wont turn about half a spring is more than enght also if the springs are not even it will drift to one side fun if you have more than one car because if ya break anything on the front end ya can be in real trouble but it is a fun mod and i think adds looksCompactChar-G 40Mhz S2000 range mod, spring suppention

By greater turning circle you mean a tighter turn, or a wider turn?
Lazboy, use punctuation mate. It helps us understand what your trying to say without having to re-read five times. Cheers.

Springs from a slot car set… hrmm… I was actually thinking of cutting up a spring from a spring loaded pen…

Locksmiths also have very small springs, in lots of sizes. I’ve read the springs form the slot cars (some makes anyway) fit really well, ubt you still have to cut them to size. I’m planning on asking the local locksmith tomorrow or early next week. I’ll let you all know how it goes.

I believe 3 and a half rings off an afx set is the best amount.

I agree with Shypo and Craz on this one… ive been choping little bita at a time of my AFX springs, and found 3 rings removed doesnt affect steering, but did tighten the cars turning circle. Thing is now, ive got to put the springs in my Compact, as i did the mod on a Cyclona… doh!!

Any spring you get will need to be cut to length from what I can gather, even the ones fro the UK site. Has anyone purchased the springs form the UK or QFM site? Can they confirm if they’re pre-cut?

um guys sorry but unless you have some weird batch or somethin those afx springs will be pretty damn useless (bar cosmetic) if you cut em in half. for starters only some springs are identicle on both sides=differing tension.the perfect length is a imposible cos there are different uses (as in the real deal). have a search in the old pages for info on susp. springs
i’ve fitted 5 bits with spring suspension one of which is hard custom springs from a lighter.dont bother with this one, a double or triple layered spring does the same.
shypo have you had a go painting the sprigs? looks sweet if done well.
one more thing, the cut uncomplete end of the spring should be wound around the nuckle so that you have even contact between the steering plate and the tops of the springs when assembled and pushed down.:8ball: -
January 31, 2003 at 6:47 am #42084
my s2000 has the hard suspension and a nimh cell.the only other thing i’ve done to it is lightening the chassis and shell by shaving layers with the stanley. on the digi scales it weighs in at 22.0 grams. those springs make a difference, i swear that tomy should have made the wiring a tiny bit sturdier and had spring suspension as a stock hop up like gears e.t.c.
-
January 31, 2003 at 3:26 pm #42068
$5 a spring set? Already cut?!? What if I want ones for different heights? Tell you what, I’ll cut the springs myself and you can drop the price back down to $1 a set… (Saving on the labour costs… Plus you’re still making an obscene profit)
Z-beam: What difference do the springs make? And what do you mean by double or triple layered spring?
The impossible just takes a little longer -
January 31, 2003 at 3:51 pm #42067
Cutting the springs in half has already been done, but they’d still need further trimming anyway, to get them to the optimal height for your driving style.
I was kind of joking about selling them, but as $5 is still $3 cheaper than on the web, $5 it is.

Z-BEAMS VARIABLE SPRING SUSPENSION MOD:
when you first start making spring suspension there are bound to be a few too short to do any thing with. so what i worked out is that by cutting a spring at the desired lenghth you can wind the other usally wasted half (or shorties) on to the cut end of the spring. just make sure you have springs with double complete ends otherwise youll need 2 pairs of springs.the difference is smoothness. on bathroom tiles the gaps of grout used to bump steering off and loose speed but now it is better. also on a smooth surface (like my track) it hugs the road like a magnet.
shypo what sort of paint? i used humbrol metalic blue.

February 11, 2003 at 5:20 pm #41363
mini z is 1/32 scale not 1/24. 1/24 are those pre painted airfix nascar models. mini-z, audley and other tin cars are all 1/32.
1/70 scale? dont you mean 1/72 scale? thats military models. a 1/72 car is about half the size of a bcg, a panzer tank in 1/72 would be a little bit smaller than a bit.
bcg is sd (super deformed) 1/64th scale. its a japanese thing, i own a few sd gundam figures and their heads are equal proportions to their bodies!any body seen the customizable mini-z style cars?
they arnt kyosho and i saw them on toyeast. you can change the distances of everything from ride height to wheel base length. for different shells.
shypo does a moris have the same length wheelbase as chevy? they are both still 1:1 scale arnt they?
-
February 12, 2003 at 1:35 am #41335
sorry Z-beam you are wrong about the scale of Mini Z, they are 1:28 scale, if you adjust the H plate tho it can become a 1:25 or 1:24 becos the actual car is becoming differnt, the 1:1 metaphor is a very different one to the Mini Z one as 1:24 shells can fit on Mini Z with a small amount of modification.
a 1:64 car is a Zip Zap, BCG are smaller than Zip Zaps and ZZ’s claim to be 1:64 so the size differnece is a large one ths making the car a 1:70, a Panzer tank is ALOT larger than a car so not all model scales are catergorized

dude sd 1/64th is what bcg is. you may say alot but that doesnt mean you know everything.
the only reason you have such a high post count is cos of the crash…. and maybe your OBSESSED.zip zaps are LONGER not larger.
the point of the metaphor is sound, we are talking actual mini-z not some shell you can “make”. have you ever seen 1/70 scale? never in all my years have I. there is 1/72 scale.do you even understand scale? of couse scale is catagorized and equal! other wise no model would look right.my point is that the difference between true 1/72nd scale and sd 1/64 is huge, and obviously not just the difference between our 2 door bcg’s and 4 door zz’s
apologize shypo cos bcg’s ARE DEFORMED 1/64th
not “1/70th or deformed 1/70th” and admit you created the whole 1/70th thing.i dont relly give a poo about mini-z anyways. go ask a couple of train mod geeks and find out.

Z-beam, no need to crack the **** dude.
im not gonna retype and get into a flame war over this but u have your opionions and i have mine, no matter what neither of us are gonna budge on our ideas. but jus becos “in all your years of a hobby” you havent seen a 1/70 car doesnt mean it doesnt exist, i havent ever seen a four leaf clover but they do exist, and sorry mate but zip zaps are larger in the width across, thats why they just float and they dont evn sit remotely well on a BCG.
so you are saying if a 1:24 shell fits on something and the wheelbase is extended and the chassis is wider then its not a 1:24, i have a feeling it is.
and the statement “do you even understand scale” is a very un called for statement, i may be younger than you but that doesnt mean i am not as clever, i may have a higher IQ or i may do very very well in school and i may be alot more clever than you, i am not saying i am i am saying that i may be.
ZZ’s come in 2 and 4 door and so do BCG, it doesnt make a difference in what style the car is
I am not apologising becos i believe i am right and i believe i have proven all my points, you may disagree but after you post i will close this or seperate this topic to avoid clouding this thread.any by the way i never said i knew evrything but i people tell me that i do know a fair bit about these litle cars, and my post count has nothing to do with the crash, i had 1100 or so posts before the crash, i got them back as did you so that was just a quite silly statement

February 15, 2003 at 7:05 pm #43666
the dimensions of a compact skyline are not to scale! all bcg cars have deformed features and there for ARE NOT scale models.
the japs use sd all the time, and the u.s doesnt like the “cutesy” look as much as japan. zip zaps are a bit wider and yes they are true 1/64th.
but that doesn’t make bcg’s a different scale shypo, it’s like fat and thin people, there both still humans.out of interest, which tomy shells have 4 doors.
also a ratio of 1/70th is mathematically unsound.what maths did/are you studying.apart from 1/10 cars all other scales ( i thought )are multiples of 8. e.g. 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/72.
no need to censor my posts, it’s all in the name of freedom of opinion and democracy.
havn’t you ever found a shamrock!? i used to get about 3 every free period in year 12.
-
February 15, 2003 at 7:11 pm #41110
my gf reckons that the only numbers that divide into 70 are 10,5 and 7. shypo count the number of possibilties within 72……….. flexable number isnt it?
is there room in the pull backs for spring suspension and shypo do you reckon that the steering assemly is at all usable/modable?
-
February 15, 2003 at 8:55 pm #41104
firstly, all valid points and u give a good argument Z-beam.
secondly- tomy shells with 4 doors are the WRX, gloria, Evo and Voltz. i may have missed some but thats all i can think of.i am studying advanced 3 unit maths, i am 2nd in my class
but what about 1/24 and 1.28 scale cars man, they aint multiples of 8. well 24 is 3×8 but 1:28 isnt
in the pullbacks, there is no specific steering knuckles, there is a form of one but it wouldnt be worth adding springs to
the steering is worthless as its a push/pull system and it locks in each direction—-

February 19, 2003 at 7:10 pm #40871
shypo 1:28 works cos it can be divided by many combinations. i used 8 as an example, the flexability is the key. 8 goes 3.5 into 28 anyways……
…..spring suspension should come standard, i’ve broke steering coil wires cos of their flimsy nature.

5 spokers, cool.
I was actually talking about the springs I sent you going onto the BCG knuckles. Or didn’t you bother fiddling around with those?
Do Cyclona knuckles come with springs fitted?

sorry dave, i got a bit lost.
the springs u sent are a bit springy but are cool, they dont lower the car at all tho, only downside.cyclonas dont come stock with springs, i jus thought that the springs were put onto the cyclona and that the person (sorry i forgot who it was) and they fitted the springs to the cyclona, so u may aswell just swap around the knuckles, theyare the same.

yeah, not me with the cyclona.
so, were those springs I sent you any good? Are they worth me trying to fit them? If I do, do I remove the sway bar?

jus chop the springs quite short and levae a little bit touching the upper part of the chassis.
fit them they are worth it.
u can leave the soft swaybar on but i dont think it makes a difference, my advice is leave it off—-

Thanks man. Is half a spring too long with those springs? How many winds past the taper did you use?

man i stretched the springs a lil bit, i have about 4 circles so u can use like 1 spring for 2-3 cars.
half a spring will make ur car stiff as and wont be 2 good, will also jack up the front end and will prolly have a negative effect—-

to lower the front end u will either hav to shave a new tab or use new tabs on the chassis, the chassis mod is prolly best with the supra as its a bastard to shave new slots into, trust me i ben there.
the tab lowering is on the admirals lair site for BCG and is about page 14 i believe—-

I’m still waiting for my springs to arrive. My only problem is that I don’t want it to lift the front end of the car, so I think that I will have to chop them down, but then the other problem is that it would pretty much be useless to use the springs.

if you remove the stock stabiliser/suspension bar you can keep it low and use springs

Really? interesting. I was under the assumption that it would raise the front end. pretty much all of my cars except for Bitzilla have the stabilizer removed.

depends on how stiff the springs are, if u have soft as springs then it wont jac up the front end at all

the clones that DO NOT fit (knuckles) nanoracers/fitchar-g and race master tornado.
all of the micro springs i’ve everseen available are all the same stiffness, what determines the ride height is the length of the spring.
all afx springs are like what shypo is sayin’ nice and soft and only just hold the chassis up.
the standard tomy suspension set (red) works amazingly well in combination with the perfect length springs.
for stiffer suspension you can wind the springs around each other.
