I must admit to having been tempted by them… I figure they could be souped up a bit 😉

These were the rage in Oz at the 2002 Toy Show… however
it probably doesn’t lend itself to too many mods.

One fan/motor for lifting, one for drive. Rudder steering.
The thing seems to run OK as is, extra power in the motors
would only drain the batteries faster.

The electronic speed control might also need attention before
you do anything to the motors; no spareparts sold separately.

For that level of $$, one could just about build a swamp boat
from a scratch and invest in some more real RC equipment.

Just wondering, since these things have almost no friction, it’d be fairly quick, right? or is it horribly limited by a gutless motor?

If life is a waste of time, and time is a waste of life, then let’s get wasted and have the time of our lives!!

Hovercrafts aren’t friction-free, only as much as a bride’s dress.
It lifts thru air pumped into a rubber skirt, and this skirt does
      brush against the ground.

Large vessels like the English Channel crafts need huge turbofans
to provide the lift and thrust… just like airplanes.
It is nowhere as ‘free’ as maglev.

Imho I’d call it an aircraft… ‘cos if you want more motor power,
you need more fuel/batteries which means more mass to carry & lift.
      Big catch 22 there.

Probably is similar to the old TAIYO RC Typhoon hovercraft in the early 90’s, was pretty sad effort, i think it had either a six or eight AA cell batterypack, it was way to slowwww, but a cool idea at the time!

      Hovercraft are in theory frictionless.
Like everything in the real universe, even maglev trains have air friction to deal with. But in general terms hovercraft are frictionless.
I have a real hovercraft and a taiyo rc. They both handle exactly the same, though I can weightshift my real hc, where the RC is purely controls. It just makes them a little harder to drive. Weightshifting you move your body weight around to make certian parts of the hull touch the water or ground and the friction helps turn
      the hc around much quicker.
As anybody been able to make their RC plough in ? On a real HC, if you are running tail wind or at high speed, a nasty thing can happen where the front of the HC loses it’s ground effect and comes in contact with the surface. At high speed
the results can be nasty. Being thrown out over the front or worse, flipping or rolling with the hull landing on top of you. I haven’t been able to do it on my RC running full speed in a tailwind.

hehe, to be honest I couldn’t remember. I had 5 days to play with it at home before I had to go away and work overseas again. I just had a quick look for it on the web. It’s a typhoon T-3 I think, camo green, unless you’re talking about my real hovercraft. It’s an Expo-4. They are different types of hovercraft.
The taiyo can hover without having to move forward
because of the fan in the hull. The expo ducts air from the fan into the skirt. It won’t fly unless the revs are up and you’ve basically moving forward.
This is the same as mine, except it’s red.

Saw some new HC’s in Hong Kong last week.
Chinese Military Landing craft. They’re about 1/2 size of the typhoons. Still big by my standards, I hope to duplicate Tim’s micro HC, but with ducted air instead of forced air. See how it goes.
I’m also thinking of an ekronplane and other WIG craft now… it’ll take a bit more thinking to make one work, but I’m sure it can be done.

look in forum.. Tim is a young fella in NZ who built a micro HC. He’s also built a bit sub and a few planes. I read a few forums when I get the chance, mostly this one because it’s australian and that one because it seems to have the most users.
      with broad topics.

      I had a idea today.
Big W had the larger RC hovercraft on sale the past week for $90, they are now back to $140. Doh ! But looking around in their toy section I found another small hovercraft for $12 !!
It isn’t RC, it has a control lead, but 30 seconds ripping that off and replacing it with a BCG brain and you’re in business !

At the moment, it’s all hands on deck for my foamie 737. Then I just got to find me some space to fly the sucker !

I don’t remeber… but if you give me a day or so, I’ll pop in and have a peek, might just buy one and store it for later abuse. It’s only small, about 20cm long and 10cm wide with a single thruster engine.
