The best way to test the pain is on an old styrofoam box. If it doesn’t eat it, it’s all good.
It’s basically petrochemicals and solvents that eat it. The timer board I may be able to build them. I’ll also try and see if I can order them.
I’m bad for blowing up batteries.

I’ll try and get them ordered and sent before the weekend.

Do you notice insects chasing the planes ?
where I fly locally here, there are always two or three flys or wasps chasing my planes.

Have you managed any aerobatics with them yet, other than hitting the ground ? 🙂

Wow, that’s new … Green for charge !
They use to be that the power LED was not on (the txer switched off) to charge the battery.
NEVER EVER let the controller get out of your hand when charging. I lost another battery because I got distracted and put the controller down for 5 minutes and the NiMH’s exploded. DOh !
I do keep spares, that is the third time I’ve done it now !! I’ll order some more with talldudes rx board. I have a box full of spare chassis and wings at the moment.

All my controllers are the old type then, I wasn’t aware that they have finally did something about it.
Which wires did you have a problem with in the 27mhz ? I had one go in flight… was like trying to land a DC10 with hydrolics failure 🙂
I should create a web page for them, with circuit diagrams and tips and tricks.

I’m not sure if the ‘flight school’ posts are still on the forum … have a search for them.

I heard in the news yesterday that Lucas Heights is actually going to start conducting public tours again. Well worth it if you get the chance.

Yep, that sounds like the former Soviet Union.
I got mugged in Alma-ata, Kazakhstan, there was no need to call the police, they were the police !

Hehehe … I have to laugh at your description of HK Panda. It isn’t much of a tourist destination.
It’s a good starting point for going overland into mainland China.

I think Talldude was refering to some of the ebay traders who are dodgy. I won’t deal with them.
Those in the gwailo markets can also be a bit dodgy since they know their customers are once off.
When I took my girlfriend on holidays last year, I would deal in chinese. When we were done she’d ask me how much. Often she was told with a giggle by the vender .. “it’s a secret !”
But when you build up a reputation with the locals you can get some good deals. I love to power bargain with Honkenese. Their tough businessmen and it is a lot fun. A lot of the other stuff like electronics I can get much cheaper than even some of my HK friends.
The one weakness chinese and cantonese have is they want the money more than you want the goods.

Chinese mainlanders are not a challange.. I’m a ruthless negotiator with them. They’re a bit like homer simpson… it’s as if they have no will of their own 🙂 They’re also very supersticous..
I have a T-shirt that has the chinese character for luck. I get different reactions, some don’t care, others almost border on desperation 🙂
I have many other secret tactics for dealing with them that would make you laugh.
I can still hear them mumbling ‘Lowai !’ 🙂

yep, wait for a really calm day cavo.
They are very jumpy in even light wind.
Later on that jumpiness you can take advantage of to do aerobatics. Practise trying to fly with level wings first, then the harder stuff 🙂
I was teaching my friend to fly circuits the other day… in the mild breeze it was quite hard to do.

I’ve got all the bits for you talldude… only the RXer board is required. I was under the impression that spare RXer boards came with the new chassis, but that wasn’t the case.
I’ll let you know when I do the next order.

I’ve been into lucas heights a few times. They used to have a lot of open days, but these days I think they might be a bit paranoid of people with malicious intentions.

It’s a very interesting place. The atomic pile in the hifar reactor is only about the size of a small fridge. The heavy water coolant (which is also the moderator) doesn’t get any hotter than 60 degrees. If the coolant fails… lets say somebody smashes a pipe.. the fission reaction cannot continue and the reactor stops.
Same for the control rods. If they fail, they fall into the pile, and the reactor stops.
The main purpose of the reactor is to produce large amounts of neutrons. Technicium is the main product of the reactor. It’s a very useful isotope that doesn’t occur naturally.

The reactor is only one small part of the whole site. They also have a Tandem particle accellerator. Think of your high school Van de Graff generator on steriods ! 🙂

A couple of Hospitals around Australia have cyclotrons for producing isotopes for medicine, and Sydney uni had a small experimental fusion reactor.

You’d be supprised at which materials around your house give off radiation.

Have a search in google for “the radiactive boyscout”.

hehehe, I was working in HK for 3 months last year and HK$550 is a standard price… you can get them even cheaper if you know where to look. 🙂 I still have friends that live in HK and they race mini-Z’s too.
$2000 for a plane ticket to HK is hiddious and I’d never pay that. There are plenty of other ways of getting there on the cheap.
I can part with much knowledge and experience if you’re serious about traveling there.
Knowing where to find stuff takes time, and being able to speak Manderin/Cantonese will get you reduced prices.
I used to haggled using manderin, and they would speak back to me in Cantonese, which I couldn’t understand. It didn’t matter, it just made me seem like an agressive mainland buyer, and they would often collapse to my demands.

But it is still cheaper to build up a reputation with a dealer by mail than to fly there and pay excess baggage. It’s not a good holiday destination in itself, but if you make it on the way or near a holiday destination, then it becomes cheap and worthwile.

Prices are even cheaper on the mainland, but you really need to speak manderin a be organised as a wholesaler. Stuff is cheap and tacky, the quality control is basically HK itself.
Consumer laws are different in HK (lots of shonks) and non exsistant in China.
Better quality stuff comes out of Taiwan and Japan directly, though both of these places can be expensive to visit on a holiday.

.. finally .. I’m back on… I’ve been having trouble getting into the website past few days.

I’ve crashed A40’s into just about everything..
I flew one deliberately into a wall the other day to destruction test it. It survived with a crumpled nose. I picked it up and it flew again instantly.

Cavo, when you get the A40’s .. put a piece of tape on top of the wing over the screws and washers. I run fibre tape from the front window to the back window over the wing. It stops the screws/washers popping out if you hit the ground hard. It’s easy to loose them.

I make it a habbit of not crashing !

you might find the NSW fun police make you get a gun licence for them.
I haven’t seen them in sydney, but I remember talking to somebody who was involved with them.
They are appearently easy to repair as they are just balsawood panels that they replace and glue back on. The rules are quite detailed.

The reactor at Lucas Heights is not same as Chernobyl and to compare it is like a whipper snipper motor compared to a F1 engine.
Lucas heights HIFAR is a 10MW slow breeder Uranium research reactor. Chernobyl was a 6GW fast breeder reactor. I’m not sure if it was Uranium or Plutonium fuel.

I know the operation of Lucas Heights well, its such a shame that nuclear science gets such bad press because of the greens. (the Armish Party)
Lucas Heights has saved many lives over the years.
Lucas Heights really is OK. Insert the goofy japanese character here? 🙂

What makes me really laugh is when somebody suggests that it could suffer a meltdown.
It’s physically impossible, you could not do it even deliberately. I look forward to hearing about the new 14MW reactor when it comes online.

I don’t have a problem with nuclear power, I have a problem with the companies they will try save a buck using it. Chernobyl is an example of what can happen when everything goes wrong.
I’ve been to the Ukraine twice, I haven’t been into the zone but I’ve been past it a few times.

The choice of 600 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide or 1Kg
of radioactive Strontium is never going to be a an easy choice.

Lucas heights also has a second smaller 100kW reactor that was decommissioned about 10 years ago. I can’t remember it’s name, but it ran for 30 years without ever needing new fuel. I’m guessing that it’s atomic pile was about 1Kg of Uranium. Picture running your car for 30 years off something the size of a small milk carton ?
How many litres of petrol or barrels of oil is that ?

I like how strong the ‘over the counter’ drugs are getting up there… combine that with whatever the hell it is you’re getting on TV ?

I think I got it workd out…. you’re watching the “australian channel” on DSS cable ?

Politcians in USA don’t need to bribe out in the open, they get more than enough money under the table for election campaigns !!

Since voting in USA is a spectator sport, they really don’t have to try hard to convince people which way to vote… they are already hard line one way or the other.

Here in Australia, voting is compulsory.
Actually voting isn’t compulsory, you attendance is ! You can write anything you like on the ballot form and some people do !

The end result of compulsory voting is that you still have the fringe hard liners that vote one way or the other, but now you have the majority of idiots to convince that you aren’t as bad as the other guys.
I like to think of it as the evil of two lessers.

Yes, we have ministers abbot and costello. It doesn’t really rate a mention here..
We prefer to think of Australian parliment as being run like a 3 ring circus, John Howard and two other ar5eholes !

I’ve got Cavo’s plans ready to send, but he’s fallen off the end of the world.
Looks like I can get a whole replacement plane for you talldude. I’m not sure what’ll cost yet,
it should be about $35. It can piggyback in another box since it weighs almost nothing.
the TXer is most of the weight.
They have the whole GWS range in stock now, but it looks like about $300 for the planes and all their bits/radios/esc/servos etc and then the postage.(yuck) A good deal compared to the $880 I saw one for the other day… Pirates!

    SOME HELPFUL TIPS.

    – … NEVER FLY IN WIND !! Just don’t !
    – stay away from trees and buildings !!
-fly in big open parks like cricket pitches with no trees nearby.
    – start with small step… don’t try loops until you can fly level and land on a cricket pitch runway !
-Height is safety… flying low is just asking for trouble… ask Shirley Strawn .. oh: he’s dead ! you have no time before you hit the ground, a safe height is about 30 metres (100ft)
    and not more than 300ft.

When you get an A40, put a piece of tape along the top of the fuselage from the windscreen to the rear window, over the two screws. Often in a hard impact, these will pop out to absorb the force. The tape stops you loosing them in long grass.

I also put a bit of fibre tape on the nose.
The nose is always the first thing to damage, but it does not effect how the plane flys. I find that a very light coating of 5 minute epoxy gives it a nice shell that resists damage.

I also sometimes put a piece of fibre tape under the wings to help re-inforce them. They don’t need it, so it’s sort of trivial.

If you make a habit of flying into trees, and some people just love them, putting fibre tape on the leading edge will help, BUT .. ANYTHING you put on the leading edge or the top side of the wing must be smooth as you can get it, no creases.
This is extreemly important. The front and top sides of wings is what makes them fly, any disturbance to the airflow, they are no longer wings !

I also use some fibre tape over the tail to hold the horizontal stabiliser in place as the provided double sided tape is sometimes dodgy. (for easy replacement). If the tail comes off in flight, the flight bit is over !

When you launch … a gentle but firm push aimed slightly above the horizon with full throttle on ready to correct any roll quickly. Remember, you fly the plane, don’t let it fly you !

Practise flying straight first… turns latter.
Start with a cricket pitch… fly down and land.
The fly down, turn slightly and land.
then a 90 degree turn and land.
then a 180 degree turn and land, then a 360 and land.
This will build up you confidence to turn…
often somebody will make a turn and decide they will not make it… two things happen… they try and turn back (wrong – make a decission, and stick to it) or they have made a bad decission and that tree is coming up a lot quicker, and they turn hard, with a dive. If you have enough height, you’ll live to learn from the mistake.
If you don’t, then you’ll learn how to crash with the minimal amount of damage. 🙂

Turn slowly… sharp turns result in dives and sometimes spins (spins are bad) Safe height will give you room to dive if you do have to turn quickly.

Land and launch into the breeze. If it is windy or a strong breeze…. consider coming back tomorrow ! The wind on the ground is always weaker than in the air, so don’t be fooled into thinking those trees are waving because they want too !

Don’t try and squeeze every last drop of power out of the battery… the motors steer the plane, if you only have enough power to run one motor, then you don’t have control of the plane.
The plane will have trouble climbing when the battery is low, time to come in and land.
Loose hieght over the area where you going to land… I always do figure 8 turns at one end of my park over the soccer goals before turning up the field and flying down the center to land.
Always turn INTO the breeze ….avoid turning down wind unless you have lots of clearence from objects etc. Hitting something at high airspeed can break things a lot easier.

If there is any kind of object in the park like goal posts of lights… do not fly near them, be aware of them and don’t look at them… if you look at an object, you WILL hit it. You should be watching the plane ! Murphy’s law and a thing called object fixation will cause you to hit it.

    ummm… I got fuselages, wings, wheels, props…
enough to build another plane except an RX board… If I’d thought about it I would have ordered one of those too ! Do you want me to find out how much it would cost for the RX board.
The wings used to cost $10 but I just rechecked what I paid for them this time round and I got slugged $11.70,($12) the fuselage cost $10.20 ($10),
I thought they might have the rxer board included, but my list says they cost $15 each.
They say they don’t do orders of less that $200usd, but I think I got shonked on the wings this time around (not that they’re already dirt cheap) so I might get them to send me an RXer board as compo 🙂 Harrass me more often and I’ll let you know.

    They’re here.

They came in at $66 this time. Customs slugged me $6 GST on each one. Mongerals even charge gst on the postage! (landed cost) They had a go at applying import duty too, which can be as much as 22%. Thankfully, they dropped that idea when I talked down their value as a ‘disposable’ item.
I guess I can’t complain, I have heaps of people who see me fly them in the park and hand me $100 note and walk away with a box. I wouldn’t mind paying the $6 tax if only there were more people in the park. I think the next batch is going to come sea freight …It peeves me off knowing that most of the cost is in freight. This box looks like an xmas present … it’s absolutely covered in stamps ! For ausmicro members they’ll always be available at cost.

Definition of a Tassie Devil is…
Take a wombat, shrink him down by half, make him carnivorious, pump him up on steriods, starve him for a few weeks and then poke him with a stick till he becomes really pissed off ! Then let him lose to run in the wild.. that’s a TD !

Yeah, Koala’s lose their cuddly appeal when you see as wild one caught and bagged ! Nasty critters !! One day I expect to hear of a Jap that has been savaged by a koala after climbing a tree and trying to cuddle one.

Skippy ! An Australian hero and National Icon !!
Since skippy left the film industry, she’s been hard up for an income… she was last seen out on the highways of Australia, selling drugs to truck drivers !! They call her, “Skipper the Pusher Kangaroo”.

There was also a song written by DAAS Kapital,
‘Skin head Skippy, the Facist Kangaroo’
… with blood soaked roller boots and a racist attitude !

The funniest thing I have seen on Russian TV was skippy, they love it ! They’ve been getting a lot of old Australian series on TV the past few years. I guess they’re cheap programing.
I wonder what will happen when they finally catch up with the rest of the world and get stuff like Gilligans island ?

The bars are caused by the AC power supply.
Get yourself a nice 7809 voltage regulator or at very least a big fat arse capacitor to try smooth out the power supply.

A good power supply with have the transforer, bridge rectifier, big arse capacitor and a voltage regulator. (and a handfull of other small components to make it look complex)
    🙂

Extending the antenna’s will only do more harm than good !
You’re dealing with microwavs here. Yes, you can send TV pictures on the stuff that cooks you food !
If you have a 1GHz system, then the antennas should no be longer than 6cm ! For 2GHz systems they need to be 3cm !
There are certain lengths that work better than others…
1/4, 1/2 and 5/8ths of a wavelength are the magic numbers.
(I used 1/4 wave as my example)

To work out the wavelength… WL= (3×10^8) / Frequency (Hz)

    example 104.9MHz
    104.9MHz = 104,900,000 Hz
    300,000,000 / 104,900,000 Hz = 2.86 metres (wavelength)

I have a box for of these micro transmitters that I got from china when I was working there.
You’d be horrified to know they cost about $60 aus if I buy the cheap models direct from the factory.
You best bet is to use a stack of small NiMH batteries to power the camera. Or do what I did with a BCG clone tank. Rip the chassis off and the RC board and just umbilical power/control it.
No RC, but the cable help recover the tank from drain pipes.

ANZAC biscuits … nar, won’t kill you in one bite.. in fact, they are a lot like sausages. Everything that is left over was put into them.
Helps you build up your immunity 🙂

The original Anzac thing, aussie identity is from WW1 when Aus and NZ soldiers were basically under the command of the UK, who fucked up the invasion of Turkey right royal an propper.
Australia didn’t have conscription and all were volunteers, a lot of 18-20 year olds and some even younger. They were a lot braver than they were smart, and it was a serious defeat.
It’s parrellel in the USA is the civil war.

Australians have a serious military history.
The Crimean War under the UK. When Brittian spent lots of money preparing for war with Russia.
The Russians didn’t want a war, but the brits basically said, you can’t not have a war, we spent too much money already preparing for one !
So they invaded the Crimea in the Ukrane and the Russians despatched them in a big way for their troubles. It was thought Russia might also try and invade British colonies, so a lot of coastal forts were built, but the russians never came.

The Boer War in Africa was next. Again Australians were under the control British.
The Aussies weren’t too happy about having to control rouge settlers just like themselves to keep them under British rule, but they did the job anyway. The last soldiers to be excuted under British command were Harry ‘breaker’ Morant and Peter Handcock. (see movie – “breaker morant” or Movie – “Gallipolli”.)
[Also see Mad Max 1 – but this has nothing to do with the other two]

From that point on, the ANZAC’s were a seperate division under their own command structure, but were basically still under instructions from the Brits during WW1.

Australia played a major role in WW2 against the axis in Europe and the Pacific and Australian soldiers suffered terribly at the hands of the Japanese if they were taken prisoner.
The fuzzy wuzzy’s played a big role and I often wonder why they do not get more of a mention.
PNG was a german colony before the war.

Korea Aussies served under the UN, and along side the USA in Vietnam. The motives for doing so were justified as communism was a very real threat.
The greenies often dismiss it and vietnam vets got the raw end of the deal when they returned home. It was the first time Australia had conscription. Their were many consciencious objectors who opposed conscription. Their lives seemed a hell of a lot better, and one in particular when on to become a politician, and the minister for defence ! And then had a go at becoming prime minister. That would have been a national discrace ! Thankfully we’re almost rid of him !

Australia continues to play a role in world security. In the gulf war, Afganistan, the Solomon Islands and East Timor.

Australian solders aren’t really refered to as ANZAC’s anymore, but any conflict which has involved us is represented by ANZAC day.

The politics behind Iraq, Afganistan, Solomons and East Timor run very deep. I can tell you of far worse things than those that have happened in Iraq that have happened in East Tiomr committed by the Indonesians, and how Australian politicians have helped cover them up.
But there will always be politics behind the deployment of Australian forces and usually the wrong reasons are the ones that get a mention.
Let it be said that the first casualty of a war, is the truth.
