Was also thinking about an electric piston engine today. little V6 using tiny rare earth magnets as pistons and coils to drive them.
Has anybody ever seen anything like that before ? I think it would look pretty cool if the parts were made from perspex.

I don’t work for the army, just with them. but occasionally they let me play with their toys.
They only have APC’s on the ground here and occasionally I might get a ride in a blackhawk.
Used to fly around in a Mil-26 and Mil-8 a lot.
(russian helicopters). weapons wise it’s a bit boring, just styer’s and 9mm brownings.
One rare occasions an MP6 or M60 turn up.

I’m amused so far at the mix of occupations.
forgot to throw in my bit.
I’m a satellite tech for a large and greedy telco. 🙂

yeah, I’m on a shitty dialup, on a compressed audio phone line on ATM over a satellite link.
I’m not sure what happened when I sent it.
dialup dropped out right at the instant.

thanks dave, it looks like it holds 24 photos per album and 20 albumn under a free acount.
I just skipped over the details, but it looks like enough space.
I would love to still have my linux box running a sever on cable, but telstra are theives and I will no longer have anything to do with them.

I hope to find and ADSL ISP that will offer unlimited up/down loads. (speed isn’t a concern).
When that happens I’ll put it back online and
then I can just fill it with good stuff 🙂

hahah, a tiny switchmode converter. I must be behind the times. I have some nice tiny little
flouro screens, the same type of thing that provides the light in LCD screens.
I could probably do some fancy stuff with them
but they are bit power hungry. Got any ideas ?

    Hi Trialex,
I’ll have to get my pics up of my mini cam wireless tanks with their remote camera.
I have heaps of video transmitting gear that i’ve built (Ham Radio/Television) and some lately that I’ve bought. Transmitter power up to 100W
    and frequencies up to 75GHz.
I’ve been playing around with the small wireless
cameras on my RC helicopters and the small RC planes, though not as small as 15cm wingspan.
I’m still up on +30cm. I did see one picolight
rc plane a few weeks ago, they wanted $300 for it
and that didn’t include half of the RC gear.
Putting a PIC chip on it to control it would be very easy, but getting a video camera on it would
be tough. I have small camera’s, but not that small. The I could get a 500mW UHF transmitter on board easy, but powering such a monster would
become a major problem. You might like to look at
some of the rocket mini cams. I can fit them into
a 1 inch tube easy, but the power to weight ratio
is more than enough to lift them and the batteries. If it isn’t, then external boosters solve that problem. Brute force solves most problems.

yeah barto ! I wanna see more pics from the slackers !
Actually, I want more space myself !
I got more pictures to put up and not enough space. I’m planning on putting them on a web page somewhere and linking them back.

hahah, I honestly didn’t think many people would remember the first rollerblades. I remember seeing them in Carlingford rink back in 86.
They were way to weird for me back then. These days bladers wipe roller skater’s arses all over the floor. (young punks !). I’ve broken too many bones already, blades are just another excuse for me to break more. 🙂

Do a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.
Well, I like my job, and I do stuff I like,
they pay me to travel overseas. (I’m currently in East Timor working with the army) So I guess I can’t complain too much 🙂 Get to play with satellites and electronics, and occasionally some
    of the army’s bigger toys.

    dgs73, you must be a child of the 90’s ? Blades ?
Skates are much more funky !!!
I saw a mini-Z a few weeks ago, special edition
“Mad Max Interceptor” … the temptation was great but I couldn’t justify $250 for it.

The 70’s were cool ! no internet, CD players, no
VCR’s, no colour TV and people were affraid microwave ovens posed a radiation risk. Be nice to visit the 70’s again, but you wouldn’t want to live there ! 🙂

I heard on the radio the other day DJ’s paying $20 for vinyl records to put on their turntables.
… if you think a turntable is a musical instrument, you deserve to pay $20 for vinyl !
Even drummers are shunning DJ’s as tallentless loosers !

LED’s need a ballast resistor or you will blow them up. I forget the formula, but generally, for 5 volts you’d use a 330 ohm resistor ballast on each LED. 4.5V about 270 ohm, 12V, about 1Kohm.
The ballast also varies for different types of LED’s, but these values ‘will work in most cases’.
LED’s are polarity sensitive. The long lead is the +’ve.
I use surface mount LED’s with SMD resistors and
some nice fine enamel wire superglued to the chassis. I use the main batteries because the
motor doesn’t miss the 20mA they draw, though for serious racing I think you’d not bother with frills either.

There is very little that uses those frequencies.
Do you have a CH0 or CH1 TV station near you ?
    Very rare these days.
If you in aus, check http://www.aca.gov.au and see what is using them near you.

    hahaha …. Z-beam.
Girls are nice to talk to ? Enjoy it while it you’re hormones last. 10 years from now, you’ll wish they’d shut up ! 🙂
Women are nice to look at. Ah, well ya never lose
that one. Unfortunately … as you get older…
they definately don’t want to look at us.
Problem is, you get older, the women you want to look at don’t. Oh, it’s a cruel world !!
They’re a bit like fire … look nice, but can burn you if you don’t handle it right.
Try telling a woman that you have to put more
than petrol into a car. Water and oil etc.
    Errrrrrrrrr.

The barcodes aren’t as silly as they sound.
The local go kart track used to use a simple IR beam version. It wasn’t 100%, if two cars went through together, the lap times would just not read for that lap. The window of opourtunity for that to happen was about 10cm on each car.
The same system could easily be scaled down for
miniZ’s, but it doesn’t look pretty will a shark fin on each car.

The method I had in mind doesn’t cost much at all. A simple pic chip that looks for coded IR
led’s. The coding can be done by 4017 or similar and a 555 timer. Very similar circuit to ph2t’s
knight rider circuit. You arrange the mark and space timing so that each code is different enough from the others. A PIC chip then looks for
the IR code of each car and logs it.
Again, the problem of two cars crossing the line
occurs if one master lap counter is used.
If one counter is used for each car, and each
counter has it’s own code to look for, the problem
goes away. You’d be looking at a cost of about $50
all up for components depending on how complex you want to make it.

I’m just going to get a thyrotron to replace my fets …. dump 20MJ straight into the motor.
The explosion will propell the car forward !
2 class A rocket motors for JATOs mounted on the sides. MiniZ drag cars … YEAH !!!!
    0 to 800kmph in 3 seconds !!!

If you’re seriously uping you voltage to the motors but still want 6 volts for your controller,
    use a LM7806 voltage regulator.
I haven’t put much thought into the motor circuit yet myself, but looking for batteries that have an internal impedence close to that of
the motor might be an idea. The are some nice
low impedence cordless phone batteries. 4.5V from
memory. 2 of these for 9 volts, you just have to make some space.

Actually, when I think about it, such a thing isn’t very hard to make. I have a lot of projects for mini RC’s.
An Amphometer for measuring speed, A dyno for measuring torque … yes, just like the real ones,
except using a couple of rubber rollers, tape recorder flywheel and a rubber band to hold the
car down. I’m developing it for real engines, but
there is no reason why it can’t be scaled down
and the same circut used for RC cars.
I’ve got an idea for measuring lap times and lap counters for several cars at once, but I’ve
been trying to think of simple ways of doing it so that cars don’t need to add much weight to a car. The idea is for miniZ’s, it would need to be much lighter for the micros.
Barcodes are really simple, and I can get laser scanners, but I’m not sure how much OSD support you can get with them.
