It may be possible to have a two position switch to select between two different capacitors (standard – extended). This may be handy, may not, to make a selectable charge time Mod.

I imagine there would be a point at which there would be no benefit in charging for any longer.

The current that flows through the tabs surely is the full motor current draw. So theoretically the lower the resistance between the PCB and the motor the better the performance would be.

Oxidisation, even a greasy fingerprint can be enough to increase the resistance of the contacts. In an ideal situation you would have a soldered connection between the conductors from the PCB and the motor case. Obviously this is a fairly dificult thing to do, but perhaps not imposible.

The cross sectional area (greater CSA = lower resistance)of the wires from the PCB to the tabs is relatively small so there may be minimal gains made by increasing the size of those wires.

As you said Jamie, the current is small, and I guess that in the big scheme of things it is. I’m an Electrician – Instrument tech by trade and regulary work on BIG industrial gear, with electric drives up to 3000 hp, so these are small yes.

The batterie/s in a Bit are only rated at what 100mAh up to perhaps 200mAh, that is milliamps per hour. So if I remember correctly, the battery in theory will deliver exactly that, 100mA for 1 hour at its rated voltage.

The PEAK amount of current available from the cell/s is actually MUCH higher. Short out a batery and tell me how hot it gets!! A lot more heat than 100mA will give yo thats for sure.

So if the motor is the item that draws the most current then improving the supply to it should make it go better.

If you look at say the 1/10 scale electric cars, most of them run say a 1200mAh (1.2 Amp) 7.2v pack, but the Electronic Speed Controllers are often rated for currents up to around 80 amps. And those cars never run for an hour. 5-10 minutes would be a good run for some of them. Likewise, a Bit doesnt run for an hour so it definately draws more than 100 – 150mA.

Gold plated contacts would improve things marginally, so would a gold plated motor, both plated, even more again I’d guess. Even tinning the motor case and the contacts with solder may improve the contact area and give you minor gains.

Whatever you do, the improvements would be fairly hard to distinguish over standard.

I get on at least every two days, depending on workload and where I am.

Thanks to everyone involved, especially Aaron for his continuous efforts in providing a safe place for us Bitheads to hang out and not be ridiculed by our real life friends, and family :smiley2:

I look forward to checking in every chance I get. Ausmicro is always my first port of call on the web. Not that I post every time, but none the less I look on average twice a day for about half an hour each time.

Talking about a Personals Adds module, My personal add would read:

    8ch Ess Vee.

Located in Devonport Tasmania, down to earth guy, with good sense of humour, I have my own track and several cars, I’m looking for fellow like minded micro rc car enthusiast to race on a casual basis. Other interests include, listening to and playing blues music, fast cars (holdens), playing bass guitar and othe rc models including 1/8 off road nitro cars and boats. For good fun racin’ times call me or PM me here.

Impreza, I have plans for little Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Honda signs to go above each garage door along with perhaps a few other props like tool boxes and tyres to go inside along the back wall .

As for the starting grid, I’m still working out the best way to mark it out. I want to put the numbers for the various starting positions on there, so a bit of mucking about to get it looking just right.

The white line that is there at the moment is actually some white 1:1 automotive pin stripe, but it doesn’t want to stick to the track very well and peels off in patches.

I actually plan to put a white strip right around the whole circuit just inside the barrier/s, but need to find something good to clean the surface with first. I will try some thinners or metho, and hopefully they won’t attack the surface!!

I want to make up a banner to go over the top of the Start Finish line and integrate some LED starting lights into it just like the real thing.

Shypo, you sure are cracking the whip on me!!

I don’t have any more at the moment, but as soon as I get some more work done, I will post a few more ‘happy snaps’ for the crew to view.

    Stay tuned :smiley2:

Sounds like a good idea, PC controlled could be fun (perhaps)

Perhaps some precision aerial manuvers by programming times and turns.

That could be a real spectator sport!!

I have an older HODR which is virtually identical to the OFNA Ultra (worlds Ultra etc)4WD Off Road Buggy with a Force 3.5cc motor.

There was never any problem getting parts for it when I was in W.A., and any that I have needed since moving to the Eastern side of the country, the contacts I had in W.A have sent over to me no problems.

Mine has been extreemly reliable, tough as nails, and HEAPS of fun.

Common (not tha they have been common at all really) breakages have included:

    Front Bumper, X 3
    Rear wing, x 2
Lost a wheel nut (knew I should have tightened it)x 1
Brake disks worn out, x 2
One wheel bearing failed (after about 2 years hard use)x 1
Snapped a shaft in one of the front shockies due to a HUGE (6-7ft high) jump into a bank with a stick jammed between the shock tower and the shock. X 1

    That is it.

    Highly reccommended from me.

And a good friend here bought one (Ultra Worlds) after seeing mine and has had no problems either.

Apart from running over the thing with a 1:1 car, I can’t imagine many genuine crashes that would break one of these cars. They are over engineered and made of tuff materials.

    Go for it!!!:D

    Sounds good in theory!

Not too sure how effective it would be in making the thing drop (lose altitude) when you went into reverse though?

Could be fun though with a few of them, especially in a large hall having races around a couple of baloons at either end of the area.

Very SLOW fun I am thinking.

    Bit like watching grass grow:smiley2:

Some people really do need their heads reading!!

Why would anyone do that to a perfectly good car let alone a collectable Group A (if it really is the real deal that is, me thinks not being an auto???)

I think I know why they did it to an auto, because their other hand would be to busy doin’ someting else to change gears!!

Old joke, but here it goes,

The Leyland P76 should have been called the P38, because it was only half the car they made it out to be.

If I remember corectly, it is one of the only cars (sedan) that you can fit a 44 gallon drum and a bale of hay in the boot!!

    How’s that for handy!!:smiley2:

The cars were crap, but the V8 version had a really sweet 4.4 litre all Alloy motor which went really well. And the manual single rail gearbox was also really tough.

Enough useless info for one day!!

It would be good to be able to time it more acurately.

There was a link somewhere that was for a realy simple circuit that could be hooked up to a PC via the parallel port and used some basic DOS software to do timing measurement.

It used a couple of photo transistors and a Laser pointer for the beam, broken by the car.

I think it was originally designed for slot cars.

I’ll have a browse and see if I can find it again, because it would be ideal for doing what you guys are talkin about.

Actually, I might even make one for myself!!

    PandaBear,

I have also seen the IEEE1394 / firewire cards going cheap (well, below $100.00 anyway last time I noticed one advertised somewhere).

Having not had the opourtunity to play with any of that stuff before, I’m still in the dark a bit.

Not too sure, but wouldn’t I also need to get my hands on some DV editing software for editing any video on the pc?

What’s good / easy to use / and reasonably priced, suggestions anyone??

My home machine is gettin’ on a bit, its a PIII 450, 9 Gig HD and 64 meg of RAM, so possibly not up to the task!!??

Any help greatfully accepted eg hard drive requirements, RAM etc.

I had heard the same thing about those chassis. Not that I have the spare ca$h at the moment to buy anything, but if I did, I would do exactly as you suggest.

I think I have also seen 1/8th scale holden shells available which I could drop onto my existing off roader, drop it down real low and put on a cool set of street tyres/wheels.

    One day perhaps!

    jamiekulhanek,

I am in Tassie, up on the North West coast, in Devonport.

Albert park would be cool for sure.

z-beam, I thought about using pva glue too, I hadn’t got around to trying either of them yet, but you are right, the pva is flexible and the resin probably would crack for sure.

As for boats on the water, I’m still looking for a suitable piece of “junk” to make em out off:D

Shypo, there are quite a few good clips available on the web of the 1/8 Off Road. One that I downloaded a month or two back has some guys going over some jumps and getting their cars about 6 feet in the air!!

I have Digital Video Camera but as yet don’t have the relevant hardware to get any video footage into my PC!

I will at some stage scan a few of my old photos and take some current pics of all my RC cars and boats plus some pics of my 1:1 cars and load ’em onto the web.

    Toy Garage so far includes:
1/8 scale Nitro Ofna HODR Off Road .21 (3.5cc) buggy.
1/8 scale Hotshot Sprint 7.5cc Outboard Tunnel Hull boat.
1/8 scale Avenger 11cc Monohull boat.
1/10 scale Fast Electric Monohull boat (still in progress)
1/18(??) scale HRT Commodore (cheapie toy type)

I’d also love to get one of the 1/10 HSV / HRT, Coupe or Maloo nitro cars. They look really nice! I’d be too scared to drive it in fear of scratching the paint (just like my 1:1 Clubsport 7 years old and still only 50,000 k’s on the clock 🙂 )

Exactly right Dave, if you are happy with it thats all that matters ultimately.

I always forget to think before I go refering to local stores that everyone here is based all around the world . Never quite sure of an equivalent either.

As for having too much time on my hands GT-ahh, I dunno, I seem to have a head full of ideas but not enough time to let the ideas filter out through to my fingertips. I guess that I’m the sort of guy who likes to use as many of my skills as possible.

I seem to be collecting heaps of little bits and pieces (of “junk” as my fiance refers to it), that will ONE DAY become something cool/useful.

I only get about half an hour every few days to do something to the track, so I have plenty of time to think about my next step and hopefully come up with the quickest and most effective way of doing it.

As soon as I get to the “next stage” of completion, I’ll also post some more pics and details on how I did it all.

I have an older Ofna HODR 1/8 scale 4wd off road buggy with a .21 engine and yeah, acceleration is awesome on those things.

Its amazing to see them struggling for traction and peppering everything behind with dirt, grass or gravel.

I remember reading a few years ago about a 1/6 scale RC funny car with a .60 nitro engine that did a 1/6th scale 1/4 mile (about 66 meters I think) in something like 1.8 seconds, from a standing start (obviously).

That is awesome acceleration and even more incredible traction for something so relatively small. They are probably heaps quicker these days, that would have been 10 years a go when I read that article.

Great fun, I will have to get stuck back into fixing my car up again. I am in the process of making new stainless brake discs and fibreglass pads for it. (4 discs, 6 pads)

Ya definately need to be able to pull these suckers up in a hurry. They weigh about 3 kilos and when they are doing 60 odd k’s objects get close really quickly. Lucky these things are so dam tuff. Touch wood, I have never broken anything except front bumpers and rear wings (cartwheels do that sometimes 😀 )

Its all a matter of time and using your imagination.

Not that my track is anywhere near complete so far a scenery yet, but I have found that some real simple techniques like paper mache is really cheap and can look quite effective in making hills, dams, etc.

As for scale equipment, there is one truck that I found which is very close to being just about the right scale and I bought it from Chickenfeed for A$2.00.

For other scenery I have even used a few rocks out of the garden, I plan on using some real dirt and some gravel put through a sieve and then sprinkled over a thin layer of glue with a coat of hairspray for dirt patches and gravel roads.

I found a few old christmas decorations that have trimmed up to look like pine trees and someone even gave me a few plastic plants out of a fish tank which when cut down should make good reeds in my dam or grass tussocks.

Only stuff so far that I have purchased for scenery is some grass “powder” used on model train setups that I will put around the track.

Ive yet to try making any other trees, but I think I remember seeing trees made from twigs with greem plastic pot scourers pulled apart and stuck on for foliage.

Another guy I knew had made hedges by cutting scourer pads into 1-2cm wide strips and gluing them down on their edge!!

For the water in my dam I’m gonna try pouring some clear fiberglass resin to look like water.

I guess if you have the time everything will eventually come your way.

I even found a small wooden dolls stool that looks just like a water tank stand, painted a plastic bottle top silver, stuck it on and presto a water tank or perhaps put a RACING FUEL decal on it for a fuel tank for pit lane.

Found a small plastic canister inside a vitamin pill bottle that is just about the right shape and size to look like a little 44 gallon drum. Coat of paint and too easy!!

    Have fun, I am!!

Enertec Micro Super Charger Black WRX which I bought a week before Christmas last. Then I got two Nano Racers for Christmas and then a Compact Char-G White Skyline the week after christmas.

The bug got me big time I tell ya!!:smiley16:

The WRX still goes (straight!! never did turn well at all). Its heaps fast, it kinda reminds me of a fly buzzing aginst a window when I put it on my track, just bounces off the barriers smokin em up everywhere 😀

One of the Nano Racers has expired. Still not exactly sure what has happened to it, just didn’t work one day 🙁
