Been doing a little thinking while I’m trying to source some of ph2t’s uber fets 🙂
Unfortunately Its left me with a few questions …

ph2t – is there a reason you havn’t stacked the fets on Nelly? I know it would put the cost up, but wouldn’t you further reduce the resistance and increase the max current? (ok weight and cost go up, but would it work and would it bring any noticeable performance differance?)

Could someone correct me if I’m wrong but doesnt the mini-z/iwaver regulate speed by pulsing power to the motor … more pulses = more frequently the motor is reciving power = car goes faster, has anyone experimented with putting a cap (larger than the 104 or 103’s for reducing interference) to smooth out power going to the motor? (to large a Cap will make speed changes sluggish I think but the right size might help. Any attempts / info.

Also on the topic of caps are any of you putting caps across the battries to improve the car’s acceleration? (asside from the one on Nelly 2) used to do it on race tins, and I figure it should work here too.

    Thanks

ph2t – seeing as you’ve managed to source these awesome fets would you be willing to resell/spill the beans on where you’re getting them?

If it aint broke – dont **** it up … err I ment dont fix it 🙂

It took me 6 RC vehicles to learn that one,
(Though I dont count improvng as the same thing as fixing)

Again Jaycar has it, Cat. WH-5580.
Quick tip, if you work for a small business with a co-operative boss 🙂 you should be able to get a wholesale account with electus (listed on the back of the 2003 catalog, Jaycar seems to be the retail arm for electus, ther’s quite a bit to be saved using electus.

Pork Hunt – thanks, If that’s the stuff I use it to stop my roller blade bolts from coming undone (to cheap to buy lock-tight)

betty.k – yeah ‘real’ tyres aint cheap … so thanks again.

Racer9 – Do canned heats come ‘out of the box’ with an internal antenna or did you mod it?

Yeah, I noticed the lack of traffic in the tincars area, I love em, they’re basic so it gives me lots to do. still a lot of what I’ve learnt can be applied to other cars … BTW I think I owe you a thank you – I think I saw a pic of one of your cars using the foam pen grips for tyres, it nudged me in the right direction when it came to looking for a way to make a cheap tyre with good grip. If there are any mods you’re interested in let me know, I’m posting my cheapo mods in a rough order trying to keep the easy ones first, and in an order that doesn’t result in a undrivable car it you do them in sequence.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

Are you pushing the power from the 9 volt through the PCB or through relays? you could try pulling the motor apart if you think that’s the prob and checking the soldering, I’ve heard that that has a tendency to melt if too much power is put through it. resoldering may get it to work again.

I’ve since discovered that lining the inside of the tyre with liquid insulator (from Jaycar) also helps prevent the tyres from slipping on the rims.

From what I’ve seen the 90km/h figures come from people running the cars on dynos, they don’t give an accurate measurement as traction, weight, acceleration, wind resistance ;p don’t have any impact on the speed of a stationary car.

if you want to use your own relays you need to make sure that they will work with the power you are providing, I’m finding 3V relays almost impossible to get easily (without ordering ones from suppliers like tinracers) and expensive.

I’m running 2x AA and 2x AAA and it’s working well for me, USE NI-MH BATTERIES, the highter the mAh the better, Ni-MH batteries porvide more power at once than standard batteries,

I’m looking at rebuilding the PCB using 4Amp Transistors so I can push more current through without using relays.

if there are specific mods you’d like to know about just ask, If I can I’ll let you know what to do (I’m mainly working on geting more from the electronics side of the package (cheaply)) and I’m sure the other guys will be eager to help too, try to ask specific questions, that way you’ll get concise answers.

I’ll be posting more cheapo mods as I get the time, including getting 4 functions from that turbo button you never knew you had 🙂 adding on a turbo boost (without using relays)
Adding extra batteries (like bored tech and myself do) underglow, indicators headlights etc.

I thought It was a mountain pass, so the shop could be on one side of the mountains, and the lake on the other… Accurate or not its an awsome track!
