I think the hard part is removing the existing fets. I tried practicing on some smd on a crashed hard disk pcb and ended up pulling up the pads and tracks.

So.. I too will need to commission someone to do this job professionally.

Talldude, by all means go and buy the mats. They are called eva mats 2 x 1 metre 2mm thick cost you $5 each. As they are seconds, look for the best ones in the pile that have been cut square. I’m finding that some of my mats aren’t completely square cut on the corners, hence, when joining them, I’m going to have to use some tape to cover the imperfections of the join.

On June, 6th I might only just bring the track barriers only (held down by tape) because it’ll take up too much time to join all the mats and smooth out the joins. Plus, all our cars have their tyres/suspension setup for the the netball court surface anyway.

Pete, as for slow down and impact points – If I get a chance, I’ll check out the foam strips situation. Other than that, we’ll have to drive it like we own the car.

Semi wides are 9.5mm wide. Don’t know which cars they suit.

Flat tyre is better than normal tyre because more contact with the graound.

Normal is rounded, and when brand new they’re like cheese cutters, with only about 3mm of the 8.5mm tyre in contact with the ground.

Track will be 5×4 metres, one lap will be around 18 metres if you take the outside lane. This is because we’re simply circling an “L” shaped track. Once we’re more experienced with the track, then I will shorten the width of the track lanes to say about 50-60cm which will allow for some tricky turns that racers will have to slow down for.

Right now, I think most of us drive full throttle, left turn, and full throttle again if you know what I mean…:smiley16:

BTW Barriers will be timber – unpainted. I couldn’t be bother painting them right now…

You should feel the amount of traction I get on these mats – bloody good.

Oh, BTW if you hit a barrier at full speed you may not rebound back into the track. I think you’ll get air instead which would be the same as if using 15mm pvc pipe. 😯 Probably not too good, but hell it’s cheap and thats what matters.

I still got to buy two more eva sheets. 🙂

PS. 1 metre is plenty for 10 Zeds in a row.

Geo-z, You’re right it is a bit plain, but I figured with 7 cars on the track it should make it reasonably challenging.

What I’d like to do is start with something simple, until we are all comfortable and then make it more challenging.

Got a price on pvc 15mm pipe and its at $2.40 a metre, long lengths of plastic “L” (don’t know what they’re called but they are $2.65 a metre. Too expensive in my opinion, so I’m going to use some timber for the barriers. I’ve got access to that timber that you put between the carpet and wall. Best thing is that it’s free and it’s triangled shaped so with some adhesive strips should stick to the mat pretty well.

Those track designs above are way too complexed and I think we’d get callouses on our hands after doing laps of the above tracks, so I’m going to simplify it for now to a simple “L” design track with 1 metre wide lanes.

Time to crack open those atomic 10 degree tyres.

Should be bringing the track on June 6th if all goes well.

Got bored, so quickly whipped up some track designs but I think I’m being too ambitous here. Still got to get a price on 15/20mm pvc pressure pipe – hopefully its going to be cheap otherwise I’ve got to scale down. I’m going to get a metre of clear hosing and use this to join the pvc pipes and some velcro adhesive strips to keep the eva mats together. The perimeter of the track alone is 16 metres and is based on 60cm wide lanes.

Bunnings definitely have pvc pipe of various sizes and all the necessary connectors/adaptors – just go to one of their larger stores. They even sell the clear rubber hosing that attaches to the pvc pipe although this could be a bit expensive but irrigation hosing would definitely be cheaper.

I was also looking at those rcp-tracks/ozite carpet, and they look pretty good but lots of $$$.

Wouldn’t that antenna cause wind resistance that would affect the cars performance and handling at high speeds ?

It looks longer and thicker than the original.

I thought about the foam barriers, but have read that they cause vehicles to rebound back into the track causing more collisions.

The foam block with velcro to the pvc pipe may help at the end of a long straight. Hmm…

Those yoga mats are 60cm by 60cm each and about 2cm thick and come in all fluro colours.

They also had 2nds neoprene mats (2x1m) for $25 each – which looked like it would offer extremely good traction.

I know you can get 30cm x 30cm play mats from those bargain stores for $10 a pack of 10 (?) but the only problem with these is that they have either numbers cut into them or shapes of animals puzzles.

If I get some time this weekend, I’m going to visit Bunnings to see how much pvc piping + connectors cost. I can’t remember which size is the most cost effective – but I guess it needs to be at a size where mini-z’s won’t launch over.

A 5×2 metre track should be okay for a z ? I’m thinking on getting another sheet to make it 6×2 metres.

I couldn’t help myself, a clark rubber just opened close by and I just had to see what they had in stock.

I ended up leaving with 5 sheets of 2 x 1 metre EVA mat (2mm thick) for $5 each. This was the cheapest I could find – I couldn’t afford those interlocking yoga mats at $9.95 a tile.

Just tried my z on the mat and the traction is damn good leaving tyre marks on the mat !

Hey dgs, are you using the same base for your track ? If so, it would be great to extend them at the meetings.

Now I need ideas from you all for the barriers. What I have in mind is pvc piping, elbows, t-sections, and most importantly upside down paper plates for the inner turns. The weight of the pvc pipe frame should hold the mats down, and to join the mats together, I’ll probably use masking tape.

The good thing about all of this is that it will all fit in the boot of the car.

I’m going to play around with trackmaker soon.

Woo…hoo… Sorted out my left turn spin outs today and am really happy about it. Bloody aftermarket h-plates I was using was the culprit all along.

Lots of rolling Zs today – mini-z + small rocks are simply a recipe for destruction. Can’t wait for the track to be finalised – I like the idea of running on foam/rubber mat.
