group shot with the off-roaders.
L to R: land cruiser, hummer,jeep wrangler and the grasshopper buggy.
the hummers a bit long and the wheel arches dont fit the chassis (choro-q), the wrangler is a bit short like the cruiser but ill get it to fit and the buggy is stock but the battery is stuffed.
ok now the off road custom and wip (work in progress).
this is the land cruiser done in tamiya froggy green metalic. started at a baby blue choro-q that was waaay to short in the front to fit the chassis. with a bunch of chopping i got the wheel arches to line up and made a custom front bullbar to make up for the half cm of shortness to cover the front chassis tab.
its a little goofy, but it worked 🙂raised it a little also front and back.

from left to right: ’32 ford, firebird, prince skyline (its a chevy! i swear!) and corvette stingray.
the ford is a complete custom job, the firebird is a converted choro-q that is a little crusty but finished (i bought 2 of these so this was the practice run), the prince is in the process of being modified to fit the q-stter chassis and the stingray is a purchased q-steer.
heres up to date pics of the hot rod finished wit matt black paint.

what colour is the “speed motor” your talking about? i also bought the patrol rx-7 and it came with orange fast gears but only a pair of white end motors…
nice use of a pre fabricated car design to keep costs down. is this for use on earth though?
i thought the mars rover designs only worked because of the reduced gravity, and even then at least one of the european ones failed on impact.
gonna test the landing capability off a roof ? 😉

my reebok skyline finally arrived today from japan. comes with the orange ended motor and it flies.
one thing that interests me is the box said high speed type AND fast motor type on it. when you get one with a faster gear set (the corvette and police rx-7) they say normal speed type and fast gear type.
could this mean the pcb’s have built in differences perhaps?still got 2 more on the way: the special paint job Bb and rx-8 that do not come with controllers. this is good as i have about 10 now heh.

that is strange.
especially since i picked up 2 of the silver wrx’s from victoria (one in ballarat) so i was assuming they’d all be like the one i got.
give a 6 tooth pinion gear and a normal orange bcg middle gear a go on it betty. pretty much all the bcg middle (spur?) gears work with the q-steer axle and a bcg 6 tooth pinion.
i see you got the wrx. its the only one out of the 4 avialable here in oz that comes with the green end motor, the rest have a white ended one. the green is faster…
got any bcg gears still? they work in these just great. and has betty seen the q-steer yet?
the rear wheels are painted in a quartered pattern of black and white, some type of camera is mounted near the axle.
while you could fit it into a mini-z youd need to modify the wheels to have the same pattern and possibly the location of where the camera watches (e.g wheel diameter) would affect readings.also this thing is cheap. its built to be messed with by young kids. it isnt the most accurate of speed readings available but it is the smallest.

after a little gathering here last week all the q-steers got opened and used and the trueno from the initial-d set had completely dodgy steering. no matter how much yo fiddled with the trim it wouldnt turn properly.
unfortunatly dave im thinking a few here and there will have stuffed wiring in the steering coils. its the same micro thin copper as bcg’s but mounted flat under the magnet of the steering arm.
also the same super fine wires are in the way of dismantling the steering.a freind in osaka japan sent me a grasshopper tamiya/tomy buggy. worked great for about three days and suddenly carked it. im pretty sure the battery is a dud (these buggies use a rechargable system). was a little underpowered considering the car its trying to emulate. not enough speed to get air of small jumps but the suspension was terrific and it has good clearance for a stock micro.
if someone with the skills to rework micros with a propo board 😉 and fit some small lipo into this chassis would really have a wonder car. mini-t stock would still be a better car so i dont think it’d be worth the bother unless someone was after a challenge.back @ you pandabear 🙂

aye dave hard to find now, from what i can glean out of google translated japanese they are in the same position also mass sellouts all over.
its good and bad for the hobby, i like knowing things are not hugely mass produced so it floods the market but not being able to buy things easily can be frustrating.
ebay is your best bet dave, not to expensive either if you have a good look 🙂

sorry talldude, the reebok skyline you have is a choro-q. it is not a q-steer. there is a q steer set with the same body but its hard to find anywhere as it is the only set with the orange end motor available right now. the q-steer version of that car has grey rims where as yours has chrome and black. if your never going to take it out of the really nice packaging then it doesnt matter much though 🙂

i received my corvette and the gears are nice but it only comes with the standard speed motor. the box says normal speed type/high speed gear type. ah well.
print quality on the initial d set is nice.
also got a few choro-q’s arrived. pontiac firebird body fits nicely after a little modification but the landcruiser and hummer will take a bit more work to get fitting properly.

have fun, this is very detailed comparison and looks at the tamiya buggies. they are a fair bit bigger than the 40mm q-steer cars…
target kids “magazine” catalogue thing has pics of q-steers in the back with a different controller. dont think they have any supplies however. christmas shopping is madness and trying to find a few more q-steers will be tough, make sure to look for them in th secured lock up cabinets as the packages are small and thieves will probably have a feild day.
bad news is pretty much all big bcg motors interfere with reception. unless you want to build a drag car that doesnt need to turn i think the old motor collections are useless.
any tech heads around care to speculate on how a motor would be interfering with the cars? any idea for a fix?the spring is only on one side though which is kinda odd. check out the official tomy q-steer website and have a look around the under development section has some great close ups of the buggies.
quick update…
did a lot of chopping, and a little shopping. found some nice railway HO scale aluminium mesh for the grill and rebuilt the back end. figured on modeling a hard top ute rather than an open tray.
all the windows are empty now. i might leave em like that. didnt end up doing the sunroof. figured ill save that for the next gravedigger body, im planning on doing a full mod on it to become a t-bucket.
sorry talldude, yes i think the faster motors are better.
ive tested the green Vs. the white q-steer motors and the green is faster (in normal and boost) on the hotwheels speed checker.
the green motor also has a little more “roll on” ability, the q-steer keeps rolling a little longer when you stop the power. new gearing (taller ratios) will expand on this disired effect. the stop/start nature of non proportional cars is sucky but it can be smoothed out with a little tinkering.
the silver 2007 wrx suby has a green end motor in it off the shelf. all others come with a white end here in aussie. the corvette stingray comes with an orange ended motor from the pics floating around ebay (i have one waiting at my p.o box ill pick up on tuesday when i stop by home).
from memory the bcg motor codes were as follows:
white: 1.0
green: 1.6
orange: 2.6
red: 3.0i vaguely remember a blue end as well. cant remember what it was rated at.
i did have a go at finding a bcg size motor on the road as i dont lug around my rc stuff these days and couldnt wait till i got back home. it came in some micro scale plastic train toy that took a single aaa battery.
i had to shave down a q pinion gear to get it to fit nicely, and allthough its bigger size gave significantly more power it somehow interfered with the reception on the q-steer.
the signals where getting to the car, they just where laggy and undrivable.im really hoping at least some of my pile of bcg motors will be usable without having this nasty side effect.

aye, matches up perfectly.
the buttons are on the opposite side of the board to the lcd display, so barring some fancy mirror tricks i dont think ill be able to get all the features onto the one side. could allways learn to solder i guess 🙂
but yes indeed, streight off the shelf these can measure a bit sized cars speed 🙂

charging on a q-steer, what a shame… looks like they have suspension in the front and back though! OMG…… wonder if its as good as betty k’s efforts tho. is that a little charging plug cap on the side of the chassis? could this just posibly be equipped with a lipo battery out of the box?

had to expand both wheel arches using sandpaper wraped around a pen. they line up nicely now.
anything that is a choro-q clone mates up perfect with a q-steer chassis. the problem arises with the lack of transparent windows and in low bodies like the mx-5 the guts prevent the body from fitting at all.
with an hour to kill today and no latex/resin to make a mould i decided stuff this im going to cut those windows out. the back end of the van got in the way so of that went, its now a ute.
still think the windows are so small i might need a sunroof in the cab still. havent seen many rods with sunroofs however so im a little stumped on how to do it.
is that a q-steer talldude or just a model/body like an autoscale?
