These are now in stock, they are all great improvements over the earlier models, with the standout being the Speedy07.

Pricing is better than ever thanks to the continued strength of the Aussie dollar.

As of all units shipped this week the Red Backs have received a minor update to the FET package as part of the move to RoHS compliance.

The power/restistance characteristics are much the same, however the current ratings have risen to a continuous 13A with peak current still limited at 100A.

This means that more than ever Spider v3.0 is the premier choice for your Mini-Z and Xmods.

Still haven’t replaced my Picco – instead having fun with a Dragon Fly (as in flappy winged thing) that Kitty got me for my B’Day….

It’s not an indoor thing, but quite amazing to fly outdoors..

Merc, wiring is the same as previous Spiders, and in the install doco. 🙂 Will dig it up later 😉

Is this beautiful looking piece of work and a nice quick motor going to get my AWD pumping or is it more set up for the f1’s

Is there an easier motor upgrade not requiring any form of turbo?

    Cheers

PN Speedy motor will do wonders for a car with stock FETs.

The Spider is reduced in size to make it more suitable for installing in any chassis, at the end of the day the electronics in the package deliver the same punch they always have!

The PCB for the v3 would fit inside the diamete of a Dime, but with the shrink etc it is Aussie 5c sized. Basically that was my target for this one. I can do smaller, but it becomes a production headache.

Power wise the Spiders and Nellys are all very similar until you step up the Nellys with the MOSFET Drivers. We all have access to the same FETs and it’s a difference of a few mOhm here and there depending on what load we use…

HakHawk, Spider v1? If you’ve got probs drop me a PM and we’ll sort out getting the chassis to me and I’ll get it running with a v3, assuming it’s not a dud main PCB 😉

I’ve dealt with them for personal stuff (a few thousand $$) and for Wholesale (we buy stuff for our online store through their wholesale division). So how do I rate them? Not great, but generally honest and reliable certainly reputable.

BUT Don’t buy anything “pre-release” as they do tend to have deadlines for delivery come and go. Example iWaver 02 stuff – we were out a lot of cash for a YEAR until they refunded it…..But they did refund it

If you don’t want to risk it generally we will handle the entire process for you on any product they sell. We order it for you, get it into Australia, then you pay us before we ship it to you. Obviously this is not as cheap as buying direct unless it s a thing we get a great wholesale break on – but we cover all the risks 😉

Well my clone was doing pretty damn good, until the cats chewed it up. OK So yes the Bengals had been fascinated by it…. And yes I was dumb enough to leave it un attended on the coffeee table.

Will have to got o T’r’U and get a real Picco 🙂

Bearings and shaft will have to happen 😉

Yeah – Had a few hiccups, took the big 1:1 trouble maker on a Club Cruise some 900km from Canberra, including a run through inland NSW. Ended up getting stuck needing some critical repairs in Coffs Harbour for two extra days.

Spider v3.0 Pic below showing the completed size. It’s wearing green at the moment, but the final production colour will be different again.

Also I’ve attached a pic showing the relative sizes of the PCBs.

    From Left to Right:
    Spider v3.0, Spider v2.1 and lastly a Spider v1.1

I haven’t checked into the Losi Micro. The v3 platform with micro wiring would fit somewhere on it, but if it’s electronically compatiblem I wouldn’t know at this stage.

The Vias are done to get the double sided thing happening, but we’ve also arranged them in such a way that we now get better heat sinking than a v2.1, a tall order considering the size drop, current paths are also better mapped and one of the key design faults in v2.1 has been well as truely addressed.

I’m out of town for the next week and then we’re into production!

3.1 internal? wow you have really been doing some serious design and testing. where does it fit? is it in the place of the old mosfets?

so is this board double sided? looks like you have some vias happening, or are they just for heat…

so what does this ” S’n’P ” mean? i’ve never heard of it.

On a MR01 it can fit above the steering fets, ie between the servo and the main PCB (Spider v2 fitted there)… On a MR02 we can expect to squeeze it above the old stock FET lcoation. AWD may be possible in the stock FET location.

Yup double sided, we went double sided with the v2.0 and never looked back. As per usual our boards are fabbed on 0.7mm thick double sided material with proper green stuff screened over the boards to protect everything.

You’ll have to wait a bit (months) for “S’n’P” to break cover, but it will revolutionise the concept of turbos. You will finally be able to buy a turbo and enhance it to suit your needs.

And no “S’n’P” doesn’t mean “Smoke and Pray” 🙂

The 5c coin is small. and this thing can be trimmed (corners) to fit INSIDE the ring of the coin….

    thats pretty impressive Aaron.

i have been looking at the 3 chip setup you were talking about. looks interesting. do gates tend to “pull high” or “pull low” or whatever? i guess i’d have to do some testing to find out…

Varies for chip to chip, some types tend high, others low… But it does work (well the FETs we currently use in Spider) with a IRF7317 type working as one half of the pairs.

I had a quick sketch of the 3 chipper, but couldn’t do the size that well. The foot print wouldn’t decrease and most likely increase above the v3 and that was my primary aim – to have the “smallest” and well and truely stake the claim on that title.

Over the life of this base design we’re planning a v3.1 (Lightweight microwire) for internal installs and a v3.2 (RoHS Lead-Free)

v3.3 will see the adoption of “S’n’P” that takes the idea of external turbos to a level never seen before….

Great fun, sure not the most controllable thing about but great proof of concept! (Chopper flying in the house)

cagefreak, We basically ran out of stock of the v2.1s…

We sell directon eBay (ausmicrocom) and through our Online Store (http://shop.ausmicro.net). The v3.0 shoudl be here next week.

Klims, when wires are soldered directly to the FETs they get exposed to a lot more direct heat and that makes them more prone to failure. It also means that any time someoen wants to re-jig their wiring they’re risking overcooking the FETs. Doing them to the board is much neater as well, much easier to get a consistent product. The new design does have an allmost direct to FET wiring setup for the motor and the Inputs are pretty close.

Betty, I reckon this is getting close. I’ve identified a couple of ways to go a little bit smaller but the assembly time will increase which is the biggest cost factor.

Klims, electronically I’m staying witht he Spider v2.1 FET package while we do the inital run (about 100 units). We’ll then be changing to a Lead Free FET set if we can get good enough performance and reliability in testing.

Lead Free is a big deal as I need to be able to declare RoHS compliance to export these to the UK. Lead free also will reduce weight as I’ll switch to a light alloy based solder.

However key highlights of v3.0 are a increase in the size of current paths on the board, massively increased current capability on the ouput and input leads, becuase the new design moves all wiring onto one side of the board, and all power routing to the other I’m confident a clever installer will be able to mount one inside MR01 and MR02 chassis. Spider v2.0 was able to be mounted in an MR01 up near the steering servounder the main PCB, now we should be able to get a lot more places.

Price wise I’m anticipating holding the price the same, the wiring costs the same, the FETs are the same for now, and the contruction time is the same. The PCB is more complex, but the cost is based on size and finish, so ultimately it doesn’t change as much as you’d think.

Terminal Block won’t be in the range initially, but may come back, and a lightweight one may come in with ultra fine control wires and short light power and output wires for mountign pretty much direct to the main board.

Thanks everyone, I had a lot of mixed feeling making post but felt that if I couldn’t share the story with the community I’d be trying to cover stuff up..

Some things I’ve learnt is no matter how close you think you are to people (friendswise) they can still let you down – and when they do even better friends will come to the surface. Whenever you get a finance company heavy leaning on you fight back, negotiate etc you will get a better result than just giving up 😉

Lastly stand up for your rights at work! If your work causes you to get crook do something about it, get them paying for your medical treatment – stuff compensation you don’t need to be greedy you need to get healthy and the law/rules are on your side.

Ohhh the tax man always wins 🙂

Jamie you’re spot on “Forgot how much fun it was…” So true, and that’s somethign I don’t want to forget again!
