A direct comparsion between the Spider and WoahNelly ranges is not that easy. The Spiders are closest to the WoahNelly EVO turbos in terms of design, while we don’t currently have a product that matches the feature sof the Nelly Deluxe with MOSFET drivers. This will change later in 2008.

As far as I’m aware ph2t has ceased building WoahNelly Turbos, however you can always drop him a PM and confirm this. The WoahNelly is a great turbo but there are some really cools things about our gear that I think give us and edge.

Starting with a good stock motor like the PN Speedy07BB is a great introduction to the increased performance without creating a missle in your loungeroom.

If core pricing is no object the AWD is just amazing, the design is excellent and is a lot of practical fun. That said the Nanoracer platform is well build and there’s not much about the MR02 platform that isn’t to be liked.

As for the overall list, bearings and PN motor will give you quick easy fun in any chassis without stressing stock electronics. I’d then suggest playing a bit with tyres and the suspension settings. Ball diffs can improve handling & predictability in the RWD chassis greatly, but in the AWD I feel they’re less of a need.

If you’re going LiPo in the long run you’re going to run into problems with the voltages controlling the MOSFETs. I would recommend at the moment getting a WoahNelly Deluxe or waiting for our Bug Turbo to come onstream with MOSFET drivers before going down the LiPo path.

Fluid dampers etc are great, but I do feel you’re going to get more tuneability out of the tyres (try some Gandini Foams – we have a new batch coming into stock real soon) before the damper type really matters.

To expand the above comments a little more, there will be develoment in 2008 of a complete MOSFET and vReg equipped version of the Bug. Basically a 10 chip package built onto a board barely the size of our first generation of 4-chip Spiders.

In the mean time “The Bug” is basically our competition to the “WoahNelly Stacked EVO turbo” that was sold through http://www.undergroundxmods.com

“The Bug” will be available from all resellers (Such as Xmods international and MaineIAC) who choose to carry/sell it as well as our Online-Store and eBay presence.

    For a start it’s physically bigger, and in v1.0 it’s basically a double-stack version of the v3.0/v4.0.

Performance is incrementally better – especially on XMods EVO becuase of the high driver voltages.

The main reason I’ve created this design is to satisfy a strong demand from Xmods EVO Owners PLUS, being a larger board there’s room on the underside to add MOSFET drivers and voltage regulators etc ala the high end Woah Nelly that is no longer available.

Don’t worry – the last stocks of the v3.0 sold out much quicker than I had expected and I’ve been caught short. So we’ve brought forward production of the v4.0… Should be available for delivery in a few weeks.

Spider v3.1 design increment will be completed in the next few days/week. Design work on Spider v4.0 has started and will evolve the Spider Platform into it’s smallest and lightest configuration.

It is very likely that v4.0 will be the final evolution of the Spider platform until new MOSFETs come available that will significantly improve performance.

Spider v4.0 will be up to 4mm narrower and 3mm shorter than the v3.0 layout. This will be pushing our PCB fabricator to their limits for being able to reliably cut the boards down to size so until we have production samples I will not quote exact measurements.

I feel that once we get down to the v4.0 size heat build up within the turbo will start being our primary problem as well as difficulties in manufacture that will increase pricing.

I have got some very very primitive ideas for a v5.0 that will be about the size of a bean but that’s at least 12 months away.

I will draw up “Longchamp” which will be the basis for a new model of Turbo. “Longchamp” will be bigger than a v3.x but initially will be a 8 MOSFET board effectively a “stacked” Spider ideal for Xmods EVO.

The longer (by maybe 6-8mm) board design over the v3.x will give me enough space to consider implementation of the MOSFETs drivers on the underside. The topside of the “Longchamp” family will always be an 8 MOSFET layout so when/if MOSFET drivers make it into the design it will be a higher performance unit than the Nelly v1.3

“Longchamp” development tree should go something like this:

    • v1.0 Longchamp PCB with 8xMOSFETs for 2xSpider Performance
    • v2.0 Longchamp Evolvolution with MOSFET Drivers
    • v3.0 Longchamp Ultimate with MOSFET Drivers + Rx Power

While a few people have installed the Spider turbos on Micro-Ts I haven’t had the opportunity to get hold of decent install photos.

So I’ve done a quick retouch to an old pic around for a Nelly Turbo. As you all know Nelly Turbos and Spiders do NOT use the same wiring.

I’ve attached the pic to this post.

Also for further reference on Micro-T installs:

    • Remove FETs from both sides of board.
    • Remove motor wires
    • Solder Spider motor wires direct to motor
    • Solder Spider signal wires as per diagram to top of PCB
    • Power can be sourced from battery or point shown on PCB

I have a new iWaver 02M in the office for testing, the FET layout seems to match. The new update instructions will have these included.

Thanks guys… I don’t think I’ll be designing a complete Rx replacement board any time soon however it’s not impossible… 40Mhz is an interesting idea. The real “problem” is legality, 27MHz and 40MHz are legal for ground based in most/all countries, but in each country the unit is sold/hipped to I’d have to have the appropriate regulatory approval. The “c-tick” approval I have now only covers the gear we import and that was/is enough of a pain in the bum to get and administer.

If ph2t has stopped with MOSFET driver based turbos I will consider building one. I’m not bothered up until now because I’ve felt that ph2t and WoahNelly deserve the respect (and all the sales) that his hard development work brings/brought.

v4.0 could potentially add the MOSFET drivers to the board. v3.1 brings in at the very least on-board motor noise filter cap/s as a small refinement of the design, they just seem to make things more stable Rx wise on some models.

When I’m back in the ofice next week I’ll start the final design drawings and we’ll see where they take us…

Have you read the v2 instructions? The wiring layout is the same. I’ve just not managed to update the pics for the v3.

The basics are the same just take advantage of the smaller package!

Already back in Canberra – was down for 3 days of Conferencing… At the Convention Centre which is part of the Crowne Plaza complex. So stayed there becuase it was easy. What wasn’t easy was the long days, and the $27/day internet access and $27.50 car parking per day….

Had I had more spare time I would have loved to catch up with people, but for three days there were two nights functions and on the third night I was in the tin chicken coming back….

Did do some sights around the place though – pics to come…

Yeah this morning – presentation breakfast, with Andrew Gaze, it was raining when I cam down, now it’s sunny and I’m instead inside bludging Internet from Fujitsu’s trade stand!

Seen rain wind sun and that’s just each day we’ve been here.

BTW what’s the Crowne Plazas reputation like? It’s nice and all – but I somehow thing it’s not as good as it should be?

Turns out it’s a Kyosho 777 in disguise, so there’s heaps of techie type stuff online. However parts are a little harder to come by. There is a great HSP reseller in Victoria though who has been helping out 😉

I need to change the main drive spur gear though, I stripped it last run a couple of months ago – by the time the parts came in we were full into moving so I haven’t had a chance to do anything with it yet…. At least I found the parts today 😉

Yeah can get a few of the weird and whacky GSM phones, Usually not as cheap as we’d like although most are pretty good packages for the $$ with extra batteries, cables, and dual SIM (built in) plus PDA and Video playback etc etc.

The downside (as with all these cheapies) is that they’re not C-Ticked and we can’t C-Tick these easily due to the lack of available specs which means a full paid test of it’s operation.

Panda, there’s more in the range that I’m sure you’ve already seen, I will be looking at make more available as they are unique compared to the Tamiya offerings….

Do you mean like the Low Speed and Highspeed needles, plus the throttle stop?

On my truck it goes something like this.

Low Speed needle gets would all the way in, then gets let out between 3.5 an 6 turns. The idle need gets turned so that the carb opens about 1mm ..

Then you have a crack at starting it.

Let it warm up and adjust the idle need down slightly before soley working on the low speed needle. Usually winding it in a bit to reduce fuel…

I think it’s a re-release. Personalyl I’m waiting for the 959 to be re-released. While I think the trucks with 3 speed have been cool, I’m not that fussed by them. But the 959, well lets just say the credit card/wallet won’t twitch – it will positively burst ordering one of them…

Not at all – I was wondering if that would be noticed 😉

We’ve branched out and had a bunch of these made earlier this year. Over the years quite a few people have suggested I get into different markets due to the contacts I have in Asia and the US. Hence why ausmicro.com (the business as opposed to this website) can supply you with anything from car performance parts, perfumes, Lingerie and of course R/C stuff. The R/C stuff is the only things we carry as regular items though 😉

I don’t believe they’re clones. Surprisingly Toyeast is a legit Silverlit reseller!

I resisted the temptation to order some in, but maybe in the next order. (Was just getting some of the iWaver FM gear for FET testing)

6 days a week I don’t miss…. But the 5 day drag I’m doing now is pretty tough, in theory it was meant to give me more time to work on ausmicro and relax a bit, instead it’s a bit of a monster.

However it is sending me to Melbourne in a few weeks, So I’m packing Kitty in the hand luggage and heading down a few days early…

Hopefully the Crowne Plaza is a good place to stay 😉

Work Work Work… Since changing jobs last year I’ve been flat out on a very steep learning curve, then with the Office/house becoming a bit too cluttered it was getting just damn hard work to get anything done.

Things shoudl start improving now though. More space, a bit more time and all that.

Move is almost complete. It’s been a absolute sh!t couple of months, well make that about 4 months but that’s another story.

Move wise we have now got spereate Office and Assembly/Storage areas which means I can work on more projects and do more design work.

The down side is that we have zero bandwidth, that’s right we’re back to dial up internet until Tel$tra makes more ADSL capacity available at the exchange. Currently investigating satellite/wireless options.

Spare Silverlit (Genuine) PiccoZ are available direct from Silverlit in the USA. Not CHeap when Toys’R’Us bothers to have them in stock here at AUD39.95

    Try http://www.silverlit.com

The spare tail rotors pack is about the same as eBay pricing though.

I’m currently investigating getting a carton or two of the “clones” into stock as my experience has been favourable.

    We currently have flying:
    T’r’U AUDM PiccoZ (in Yellow)
    UKDM PiccoZ (in Pink)
1 larger RF controlled indoor Heli (by Silverlit)

I’m eventually going to rebuild the cat chewed clone into an ultra light design to learn more about them.

Pinion sizes can help a lot with things. The best thing I’ve found is to do some straight long-run tests with a motor and each size pinion, ideally I want to get top-speed as quick as possible with maximum control (less wheel spin, crazy fish tails etc).

If the pinion is sized right you get good top speed, but also great ability to drive out of corners without spinning. Is this the best method? I’m not sure, but it works for me. Generally it also means that the motors don’t bog down as much either, becuase I start small (lots of spin/acceleration) and work up (more speed, less traction issues) stopping when I can control it.

Re: IW02M – I will eventually pick one up. But it’s not on my priority list since our order with TE/iWaver fell through after close to 12 months of them having my cash.

Micro-T and new manual are coming first ulse I get sent IW02M by someone for testing.
