I’ve got my 20 yesterday. At a 20% lower cost at the moment these could be an option for a few people. I’ll try to solder a stack in today for testing.
On a different note:
Looking at those voltages again and some of the ‘cheaper’ IRF FETs I think a 4 FET “Whoa Nelly” style (discrete N and P channels in in single SO-8 chips) Turbo could manage about 16mohms. That’s without the MOSFET Drivers.
It’d only be rated at 16A but probably more than enough for mild stuff. Looking at the cost of the chips and PCB fabbing – it may be a very viable cheap option. (about the same price as 5×2 IRF7317)

Site Owner Guy.FWIW the IRF7389s are ‘crap’ below 4.5v, while the IRF7317 @ 2.7v is as bad as a IRF7389 is at 4.5v
Here’s the numbers based on the voltage measurements ph2t has come up with for a stock PCB – these values are calculated from IRF datasheets:
IRF7389:
Total resistance at voltages for stock PCB 0.165ohmsIRF7317:
Total resistance at voltages for stock PCB 0.065ohmsSo by default these new IRF7317s will be a significantly better performer than the IRF7389s in theory.
They should arrive today for testing in car.

Site Owner Guy.*nods* Assuming Australia has a Master Distributer and they have good contacts that should be the case. As of a couple of weeks ago this wasn’t in place.
However iWaver should start shipping around the first week in October, numbers will be limited due to limited manufacture.

Site Owner Guy.*laughs* no actually between having a car trashed ($8Kish worth of damage to geta $350 stereo), a friend dying and a roomie to make room for this last week has been very very average. I’ve done what I’ve needed to do but not really much of the ‘back-end business’ stuff which includes a stack of iWaver related things.
I _will_ post info once I’ve dug out stuff that’s of use.
But a brief rundown:
iWaver 02 will be the International Launch vehicle.
iWaver 01 will become a lot like MZ1.5
The digital LCD Controller will be available on all othe range as an option (standard on more expensive cars)
Each product in the range (01, 02, 03, 04) has a set USD Rec Retail Price, and while they can be imported into Australia below RRP by us the GSt and Duty doesn’t leave much margin. But don’t expect TE to sell them as cheap as they have been either. (just over 50% of RRP)
02 will be around in limited numbers for Christmas, I’ve missed the first preorder window, but the Minimum buy in was 240 units. That will remain until after Christmas. They are only capable of producing 200 ’02 class machiens per day.
The parts range will be increased, and yes ausmicro.com will be buying in some of the parts if the pricing is good enough.
PCB/Servo combos will be available – great for heart transplant projects!
Quality will be improved…
Basically iWaver have got a plan to be in business for a few years at least and the range will come out over that time. They are staggering their rollout so they have new product coming on stream as previous products settle in ‘regular’ running.

Site Owner Guy.As a side thing – the IRF7389 replacements I’m tinkering with are happier with a lower gate voltage as well. Not down to 3.0v area but better than that of the IRF7389s.
It’s interesting how development moves along on Nelly, and what’s being learnt about the electronics design in the course of it all. Considering Kysho was/is using a logic triggered HEXFET one would have thought they’d drive it at the appropriate levels… *shrugs*

Site Owner Guy.For a start – the “Whoa Nelly” setup is about the best you’ll get in terms of Turbos that are external to the chassis. Hands down no contest.
BUT
FET stacking is great for getting a little boost out of your car and keeping it all stock looking. Even just replacing the stock FETs with a pair of lower resistance (and higher current rated) FETs without stacking does improve things.
Think of it this way, a 5×2 FET stack will cost you AUD25 (using IRF7389 from ausmicro.com) for performance thats still eclipsed by a Nelly.
I’m hoping the new FETs I’m trialling will be about AUD20 and offer greater peformance than the old stuff and will sit nicely as a middle ground.
