thanks for the info guys, i’m a first class newbie in the rc world! i’ve restored the original motors (turns out they have more torque than the tamiya’s!) and moved the aerial to the front. it works a little better, but not as well as the first time. it originally was 3v , so maybe uA is right. but 3v is too weak for the motors so i guess i’ll have to buy something with a 6v pcb. can you guys recomend a relatively inexpensive rx/tx unit with vertical controllers?

i’ve got the capacitors across the terminals. originally the range was about 15-20m. today it,s acting strange. the stuttery channel (left motor) stutters when activated on it’s own, but if i activate the right motor the left motor stops stuttering. does this mean a capacitor is playing up?:8ball:

pic didn’t work for me, but i understand what you’re saying now. i’ve got a proper battery compartment, just couldn’t wait to get it going! if you used enough blu tack and electrical tape, you could fix the sydney harbour bridge!! nice pics yourself btw. can you give me some good rc tank sites, doesn’t seem to be many around that aren’t some sort of military thing!:8ball:

cool, thanks trash, that helps me out. i found a cheap 2 ch rc toy today with 2 vertical levers on the tx. i pulled the guts out, and the motors from the toy fit in the gearbox.works better than i expected! if i want to use the tamiya motors that came with the gearbox, should i wire them up exactly the same as the motors from the toy? the toy motors had capacitors across the terminals and also one terminal was wired to the motor shell. is this what you meant by your last sentence?:8ball:

a single charge takes 15 minutes and you get about 5-10 mins run time. it climbs over stuff pretty well but it’s very slow. if you drive it in the garden the internals get alot of dirt in them. range is about 5m. very realistic looking detail. they’re lotsa fun just damn slow! i was thinking of dropping a couple of 2.4v batts in (comes with 3 x 1/2 aaa nimh. 200ah, 3.6v) but i’m thinking i should just get another bigger better faster tank. i’m not interested in realistic detail, just an rc toy that crawls around the garden!:8ball:

you know those sticky things you throw at the wall, and they slowly crawl down? if you made tires out of that stuff, you should be able to drive up walls!!:8ball:

no worries tm. enertec cars are sold at tandy and dick smith electronics in melbourne. ( oz version of radio shack) they come with a dual 2.4v nimh batt, 2 speed (forward), front and rear lights, long range (i can get one 30m), longer wheelbase (bcg=30mm. enertec=36mm) and even an on/off switch! but they’re an absolute pain to work on! hardwired motor, have to remove pcb and motor cover(plastic) just to get to the motor and lights glued to the chassis in annoying places! but they fly -at least 10kph! only 3 body designs ; wrx, pt cruiser, and one so ugly i’m not going to describe it!:8ball:

i’ve since tried spring suspension and found that the steering was a little sluggish, due to the contact area of the springs. with the springy sway bar the pressure is applied to a tiny point, so the steering moves more freely. let me know if you try this, i’m curious as to how this works for other people in different driving conditions.:8ball:

no glitch in the pics, the sway bar has been replaced with…….. you guessed it, more acetate! (acetate is just clear plastic sheets, like the plastic stuff your bit came in.) i just cut some out in the shape of the sway bar and inserted a bit of wire to hold it flush to the chassis. a little drop of pva glue on top to stop it moving around and, voila! front suspension. drastically reduces rollovers due to tiny bumps at high speed. more pics of this mod in my gallery

yes it’s an enertec. i’m quite fond of them cos they scream straight out of the box, handle well at high speeds and cost $27.( i’m a tighta8s, don’t actually own a tomy bit!) i’m the kind of person that loves the minimal look, i generally drive my bits with the cover off for weight reduction and looks. but with an enertec the pcb sits right on top, so i needed to add some protection for rollovers. i drive mostly outside on concrete so it happens regularly. i had some acetate lying around and made a paper template by folding in half and cutting little bits off til it looked right. i folded a bit of acetate in half, drew the outline of the template on it, cut it out and painted the inside black. it wraps around the chassis from the top and is attached with 4 tiny screws at the bottom(those little dots between front and rear wheels. sorry, camera phone shots).the rear panel is atached with 2 more screws above the motor.as for what’s inside……… nothing! it’s just stock parts on the inside. i removed the rear lights and moved the front ones back. it does keep the motor and battery a lot cooler. don’t go looking too hard for technical brilliance, i’m very new to this rc/micro rc thing (2 months) but by ristening your teachings, i have brossomed from a tiny sprout, into the mighty twisted willow that stands before you!!
ps thanks for the tip uA, hope i get it this time!:8ball:
pps any ideas about what to put in the body?

i’m having the same problems too, but using a tomy motor (2.6) in a clone chassis. the tomy motor came with a white 7 tooth pinion which meshed too tightly, so i used the 6 tooth pinion that was originally in that bit. but it’s still just a bit too tight. i suspect a little chassis modding would be the only solution:8ball: http://members.ausmicro.com/memberview.asp?user=betty.k

what ever you do, don’t use nail polish remover. i found out the hard way! it starts to soak into the plastic, turning it into gooey mush!:sad:http://members.ausmicro.com/memberview.asp?user=betty.k
