Or nuts… either way the thing that amazes me most is no thte car, but the engine.

At 1:1 scale there’s well skilled mechanics and engineers who’d quiver with fear at rebuilding a mechanical fuel injection setup that uses a phased pump and distubuter block to give sequential injection. Yet here’s a guy thats made his own 1:3rd scale! Legend!

He’d have no shame in just having it run a basic mechanical constant fire system at that scale but it looks like he’s done it right, totally amazing!

Toys R Us also sell a cheap clone with trigger controls. They’re the exact same controller as the HSV/Holden ones…. So you get a pretty good idea of how much the Holden ones are really worth under the skin. Packaging is almost identical…

What kind of motor is it going to be running? I do have a ESC that’s only good for ‘stock’ motors that I probably should upgrade to somehting more grunty….

Balloon works great on radio gear – for ESC you may need somethign ‘better’ with airflow.

Seal gearboxes with a small amount of silicon smeared over joins etc – not perfect but good enough to block 99% of sand.

All I can tell you is that you should make sure you gearboxes are SEALED before hand 😉 It helps if you known the radio gear is pretty much waterproof 😉

I drowned the Baja an few weeks agao and suspect I’ve fried the Receiver and the ESC…. No very cool at all ….

Other than that I’d say stick to firmer sand than the softer stuff and have fun… on the soft stuff don’t turn too hard becuase it’ll dig in flip and roll at any sort of speed 😉

ESC= Electronic Speed Controller

Essentially it is a bunch of high power FETS that run the motor of the car. FETs and more efficent at driving the car at part speeds becuase they pulse the motor on and off rapidly instead of using a resistor to limit the power available to the motor like a mechanical unit does.

There’s a lot more detail that could be filled into that but in simply terms ESC is good becuase you get:

Usually better performance
Smoother operation as you have linear control of speed
Usually longer runtimes (unless you’re alsways at full throttle)
Braking! Yes ESC typically integrate EMF braking which means you can control the car better into turns etc

CEN as a run does build some decent stuff – good features good prices etc. I owned a CEN road car for a while and it was a very good little unit.

I was lucky enough not to break anythign major – and yet still found that when I did break stuff parts were available to fix it, not the cheapest parts but reasonable 😉

If the trucks are like their cars they’ll take any of the popular sized bodies and adhere to fairly common mechanical parts.

Tower definately do a form of Air shipping – At leats it’s always come up for me looking at ‘lectric stuff.

You may have th odd situation that they won’t ship the trucks by air due to weight or something silly….

Where timer development is at right now:

Ringodingo.com has got their DingoTimer slot car timing system out there – it’s a great package and ausmicro.com has been working with them to develop the package to allow it to be expanded into other racing systems.

The big cost hurdle is the detection of the car – and detecting multiple cars effectively. We want a cheap system that can work for Bit char-g size right through to 1/10th scale cars.

We just need to feed the software an input from the serial port identifying a car and voila we’re there.

Jamie – the car is leased, and will probably remain stock – I may consider exhaust changes and stuff like that after a year or so.

From what the Redcliff Dyno guys are getting (400kw+ at crank) there’s a lot of potential to tap into.

RFID is a wireless transponder technology that’s used for heap of different things – including loss-prevention in the retail industry.

The transponders are passive (no batteries) and uniquely coded and quite small while the receiver technology is able to be linked directly to a serial port… http://www.rfid.org is a good link I think…

Barcodes can’t cover multiple cars simultaneously… Also there’s a read speed issue…

Blueprint 😉 It was a toss up between Blood Orange or Blueprint.. I settled on Blueprint with eh Blueprint interior…

The Blood Orange would match the red turbo badge better though – *grins* – but I think the Blueprint is better for resale and if I end up giving it too my dad I think he’d like the Blueprint better 😉

The chassis are not too bad – but aren’t really mainstream – I suspect they’re bought real cheap and then reshelled here with the HSV and HRT bodies.

I’m fairly sure parts support will be an issue into the future and they’re definately not a racing machine.

Better off buying a shell to suit a Tamiya chassis and goign from there if you want to take it seriously 😉

Tandy in Australia was “Intertan” and basically an Aussie offshoot but these days it’s yet another chain owned by Woothworths! The same people that own the Dick Smith Electronics chain.

That’s why “Digitor” stuff is turning up int he Tandy stores….
