Hehehe, Mirage flys like a cranky hornet 🙂
You should try fly it with a tophat control like I have…. it’s all over the place. 🙂

I’ve notice that same problem on a lot of my 27Mhz planes Talldude. A quick listen on 27.145Mhz and I remember what’s actually on that frequency !!!

    DIATHERMY

Diathermy machines are like industrial microwave ovens. They’re big and powerful and they spew cr@p out all over 27.145Mhz. Around seven hills there are a few and they really used to make life hell for CBer’s back in the 80’s.

I’m going to have a look at my 27Mhz A40 at a later date and see if I can change its frequency to something else.

    Will let ya know.

    More gallery space is cool.
I’m happier with lots of small filesize pictures than a few larger ones.

I guess an ausmicro sticker would be good advertising next to my “I brake for Halucinations”
sticker on the back of my car ?

I’m a bit lacking in ideas tonight, just got back from holidays so my brain is in low range at the moment.

    Yep,
I hang onto the battery while it charges.
With the NiCd’s it takes about 3-5 minutes.
With Fresh Alkalines, 1 minute and they’re crispy.
Basically I take them off when they are really warm. Never ever put the RC down when it’s charging batteries. I’ve blown up two lots of batteries now. Doh !
High as a rugby post, that sounds weird ?
    I often fly mine between 100-200ft. (30-60metres).
Is it full power on and just not climbing away ?
How long do you get out of a flight ? Is it the same duration as your other A40 ?
It just sounds like the plane battery isn’t charged fully. If your using the NiCd’s in the txer, then make sure they are fully charged.
I find that when they are a bit down that it takes much longer to charge the plane’s NiMH’s.
Switch to Alkalines in the TXer and charge the plane’s batteries. The NiMH will get hot pretty quick. (1 minute). Try it then, it should be criuzin’ !!

    SOARING

Soaring or Thermalling has to be the most satisfying part of flying. Knowing that you can fly with your wings and that it is not the engines that keep you up.

Rising air of any kind will help keep your plane up longer than it would normally with just the engines.

We all know that hot air rises and thermals are basically that. You can think of them as a column of rising air that sucks in air from the ground around it. They will often move across a paddock. Thermals are a bit like dust devils, just a lot more gentle.

If your plane is flying along at 100ft and you’re looking for a thermal, you will see the plane tip to one side slightly. Thermals will turn the plane out and away from the center.
If the plane tips right, then you should continue to turn tightly to the right and fly back around to the same point in the sky, but slightly more to the left this time.

When you hit the thermal head on, the nose will tip up, time to turn !!
You can picture in your mind where the core of the thermal is and circle around it trying to keep your wings as flat as posible. The thermal will continue to try tip you out like before. Keep turning into the thermal and your plane with be rising quickly.
You should find that you do not need any throttle at all and only small nudges with the rudder to stay in the core.
Be careful not to let your plane get sucked up out of range or it will fly away. 🙂

A rule of thermaling is turn the same direction as anything else already in the thermal. This rule is to avoid mid air collisions with other planes or birds etc. It’s not of much help to you, but it is a good habit to practise.

Ridge soaring is slightly different. In a steady breeze when air hits a hill or other obstruction like a line of trees, the air is often forced up and over it.
It’s this rising air that is used for extra lift.

Ridge lift will appear above even small obstructions and the higher pressure air will extend up quite high above. A good example is a line of trees. In a light wind about 45 degrees in front and 50 ft above the trees will be an area of steady reliable lift. If you fly in a figure 8 pattern turning into the wind away from the ridge (never turn downwind, towards the trees or the hill), you should be able to stay in the lift band very easily. There is a building on one park I fly at the produces good lift when the breeze blows on it I can almost make my plane hover.

Never ever fly behind the trees, the turbulance is extreem, even above and behind them, the air is being sucked down, and so will your plane ! Flying directly in front of the trees can also have the same effect. The air closer to the tree is moving slower than the air further out. This will cause your plane to be tipped in and fly into the trees. It is called “Wind Gradient”. Even more extreem is if you’re closer to the ground, the air in front of the trees is rotating like a big dust devil on it’s side. If your plane flys into the down draft, you’ll experience wind sheer and \SMACK// into the ground you go !
It gets more fun if you miss the ground because as you do an emergency turn away from the trees you’ll get sudden updraft and you’ll wingover and back into the trees you go !

The rule is, never fly near trees unless your above them and in front and the wind isn’t too strong ! Trees are like flypaper for RC planes.

Flying from the top of a hill, stay in front.
Don’t let the plane drift behind the ridge and always turn into the wind.

It worries me that the engineers of the future have started off with lego.

The mirage is ok to fly, but it is small light and very agile. They fly fast for their size so you need lightening fast reflexes.
I like the version Talldude has better than mine.
His has a standard controller and mine has a joystick with a tophat, and that makes them much harder to control.

OK, here’s the specs for the A40.

    The A40’s specs are ….
    Wingspan: 49cm
    Length : 40cm
    Height : 14cm (tail) 9cm (wing)
    Weight :~85grams
    Airspeed:~35kph
    Stall :~15kph
    Duration:~5 minutes (at full throttle)
    Range : 300m

The A40 does come with spare props, but they are going to be the last thing you break. I finally broke my first one after flying into a netball post.

I find the order in which things break are…

The nose, a little bit of tape or epoxy protects it well. It’s going to get crumpled if you fly into the ground a lot. It doesn’t effect the flight of the aircraft much. Just keep the weight of extra glue to a minimum.

The screws in the top of the wing often pop out and you loose them too. A piece of tape along the top of the plane will save them.

Nose Wheel. The metal support can get fatigue and snap after a few hard landings. A paper clip is a cheap alternative or some spring steel from the hobby shop.

Wings. You’re going to break one sooner or later.
You can re-inforce them with fibre or sticky tape. The leading edge and top side of the wing should be perfectly smooth. If they do break, 5 minute epoxy again fixes them quickly. I have several fractures now and the wing is mostly epoxy. It’s starting to get heavy and plane looks a bit more sluggish. About time for a new one for me. They cost about $12-15 for a new one, and that includes the motors and props.

The horizontal tailplane also breaks if you’re good at cartwheel landings. Again with the epoxy
    to fix it quickly.

Finally after lots of hard impacts the fuselage will probably start to show fractures. They are also cheap to replace.

I have a really short pic of one flying at …

I was wondering where this thread came from.. I hadn’t noticed it. But looking at the dates in the header. jan 2003.

What we need to do is get all the different colour and style motors and destruction test them.
    👿
Well maybe not destroy them all, just one…
but run them all through a standard dyno type test.

Voltage / Current / Load / RPM type graph.

I can think of a way of making a tiny brake dyno
that can put a standard load on the motor.

After knowing this data on a graph it would take the guess work out of the motors. probably take some of the fun out too. 🙂

Hmmm…. Micro DUI. I got to try that one.
Have you got any micro tanks ?
Place four of them on a coffee table for a bout of tank sumo wrestling. I think I’ll add some home brew vodka to that challenge next time friends are over.

Another quite day, just the four of us plus hanger on 🙂

Damn wind picked up…. decided to do the stoopid thing and try some simple flights. I think I managed to hit everything in the park with with my A40 before I finally broke a wing.

It’s already flying again on the same wing. Thank you 5 minute epoxy !

you want a mirage … have you seen them fly ?

The postage to vic is probably about $12, don’t quote me on that… but it will be close.

Talldude got a good deal on one from usa.
Cheaper than I can get them for, you might like to ask him ?

I want fuel cells, I’m sick of having to recharge batteries. Just add a few mL of ethanol and away ya go !!!!
I’ll accept light water cold fushion technology as a substitue for that. I’m not fussy, one or the other 🙂

    Actually, (correction coming up)…
Santa, was originally an all white suit. (no green).
You can still see the original santa in orthodox countries, especially Russia. (xmas day is the 7th of jan) St Nicolas, or Father Frost as he is know. It’s very rare to see a red santa there. He is known to ride in a sleigh (it’s called a troika, which is tradionally pulled by three specially trained horses).

I would however like to point out that santa seems to have a dual personality.

SANTA – SATAN … an anagram.
    Both wear a read suit,
    Both like little children,
and you never see them together at the same time !

I ask you… is it the same person ?

It looks pretty good. Any descriptions on how it flys ?

I was down meadowbank today with the boyz.
Damn wind picked up, but I figured I’d be stupid and fly anyway. As expected I hit various things including the ground. Pretty nasty damage to my A40, but nothing that can’t be fixed with 5 minute epoxy ! 🙂
The tailplane snapped on one side, a broken prop (my first) and the main wing has a large tear in it. Easy stuff to fix. The fuselage looks a bit ugly these days, but the epoxy nose seems indestructable. I might give in an give it some nice new parts, but in the mean time I’ll see how much punishment it’ll take.
